Have Mark Levin and John McCain ever opposed a war?

Have tantruming armchair isolationists ever found a war worth fighting?

I’m against it too but this was not exactly a flip flop or change for Trump. Sure back four or five years ago he critizized Obama and wanted out of Afghanistan but last year as a Presidential canidate he was for staying:

DONALD TRUMP (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I would stay in Afghanistan. It’s probably the one place we should have gone in the Middle East because it’s adjacent and right next to Pakistan which has nuclear weapons. So I think you have to stay and do the best you can, not that it’s ever going to be great but I don’t think we have much of a choice. That’s one place, frankly, instead of going to Iraq we probably should have gone there first. I would say in Afghanistan and only, again, because of its location next to Pakistan.

O’REILLY: All right. So you would keep the 10,000 troops there. And fight a war of attrition against the Taliban? You know, Pakistan —

TRUMP: I hate doing it, I hate doing it so much. But, again, you have nuclear weapons in Pakistan so I would do it.

That was the Obama team’s view: Afghanistan was supposed to be the “good” war and Iraq the “bad” one.

And the alternative being advocated wasn’t to leave, but not to ramp up our troop and treasure investment there.

The Trump admin is clearly minimizing and letting them off the hook. Now, it could be because they didn’t get around to even nominating a new US attorney for the district until June, and so the Obama carryovers are in charge still—as with so much of the government.

I am sure you are as dumbfounded as I am over Jeff Sessions. What in the world is this guy doing each day? Why in the world is he retaining Obozo’s U.S. Attorneys seven months into this administration? It is standard SOP to purged all of them as a matter of good operating practice immediately into a new administration. As holdovers in such key positions across the country, it is well known they can be the most destructive subverters in the Executive Branch.

Actually the DoJ is way ahead of most of Trump’s cabinet-level departments. We still have an Obama state department, for example. And it is the admin’s head of personnel more than anyone else responsible for the hiring train wreck. John DeStephano is his name and he was one of Priebus’s GOPe guys. He made sure they dragged their feet on nominating anyone, and ehen anyone was nominated he or she was more in the Never Trump than Trump supporter camp.

I'm thinking we are in Afghanistan to keep an eye on Iran/Pakistan. Knock off a few terrorist while we are at it. There is a deeper strategy here folks.

American intelligence would use the opportunity to set up electronic surveillance both on the Iranian/Paki borders.

Think about it for a moment...are we really there to hunt down a bunch of dirt poor cave dwellers? For 16+ years?

“Were we listening to the same speech? President Trump spoke out against nation building”

I don’t know what speech some of these posters heard. Being we are not into nation building would also include Syria. We are only there to kill the terrorist.

I'm wondering if we switch our mission to killing terrorists instead of telling people how to lead their lives we get the support we need from the population.

In that speech, several times President Trump made it very clear that he was abandoning regime change and nation building. Was that message as much for the populations of Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq as it was for us?

Good observation. No doubt it was and I would say Pakistan as well.
