Preparing for the eclipse!!
self

Posted on 08/19/2017 12:06:21 PM PDT by djf

OK!

I am getting ready to drive the 200 miles or so south towards Salem/Eugene Oregon.

I figured it's also a good time to test my survival skills, somewhat lightly.

So far I have packed: three cans of Chef Boyardee, three cans of sardines, two cans of Dinty moore stew. Forks and knives and spoons as well. A garbage bag for the empty cans. My three cameras, well, two cell phones and an older Vivitar camera.

I have an extra gallon of gas in my trunk, plus oil and ATF.

Anything else? Any hints/tips?

So sorry to hear about your health.

I figure at 63, I might as well do it - the chances of me making it till 2024 aren’t all that stellar...

Plus at 200 miles, well, that’s pretty much an afternoon of driving.

I knew the media was overplaying it, I’ve been watching the Oregon road cams and there simply is no backlog.

Stay tuned and you can watch it on the Internet!

Traffic shouldn’t be too bad. Mostly Ford 250 pickups with gun racks in the back.

Thanks. I’ll be 61 for the 2024 eclipse, and will be within about a 2 hour drive of the totality path. At least I can look forward to that.

My health problems are not debilitating, I just have a sciatic nerve issue which won’t allow me to drive for any more than very short periods of time. The excruciating and constant pain would take any fun I could have out of the trip.

Any flat rock or cement surface can substitute for a can opener. Just “sand” the can with the crimped lid against the rock, and then “flext” the can. Eventually you will grind enough metal away that the lid will simply cleanly “pop” right off.

“something to heat up the beef stew and chef boyardee with. Sterno stove or propane burner/stove”

Getting a little soft are we? In the Army 22 years and never heated up anything (c-rats, MRE’s, Chef Boyardee (sp). Hell, I still open cans of chili or ravioli and eat them out of the can. She hates that, which makes it even more fun.

Dihydrogen monoxide????

Are you insane those are the two most volatile atoms in existence! They make rocket fuel outta it! Without one of those two atoms fire does not even exist.

Yep, that was probably what eight or ten years ago? At the time it seemed cutting edge (to me at least) to coordinate something like that over the internet.

I remember you saying you used a cardboard box as an umbrella to keep the rain off when you picked it up.

Dad nails those tennis balls back at me probably thanks to that machine. Maybe one of these days I’ll beat him but not anytime soon...

I am not sure about the gun laws in Oregon, but am pretty sure that absent a CWP, I can’t have a loaded gun next to me in my car.

Which means carrying it in the trunk, not much of an option...

So I decided to forego the gun thing.

WATER, first aid kit, blanket or two, change of clothes, extra pair of comfortable walking shoes, bug spray, sun screen, box of kleenex, toilet paper, hand wipes, matches, better selection of food

Don’t forget to take a can opener if those are regular cans.

First aid kit is a good idea.

I don’t expect anything to happen to me, but it sure could happen to others!

I will dig one out of my survival stuff!

I did the change-of-clothes thing already...

I won't be working from home, but will still be ignoring the whole thing.

First of all get that gallon of gas out of your trunk. Stop at a gas station when your tank is half full.

If you need to pack crankcase oil and ATF get a different vehicle.

I carry my “John Wayne” (P38?) on my key ring and I know how to use it.
