Eclipse damage: Doctors can't help
gazettetimes.com ^ | August 7, 2017 | JENNIFER MOODY

So you went and looked at the full solar eclipse without proper eye protection, and now your vision is blurry, distorted or tinged with red.

What can your eye doctor do about it?

Short answer: Nothing. So don't.

Ophthalmologist Tomas Lopez of Eyecare Associates in Albany and Corvallis met with about two dozen mid-valley eyecare and health care professionals last week to go over information on the Aug. 21 eclipse and possible effects on patients.

While a quick glance probably won't hurt you — and while the sun can't be seen at all if you look directly at the coming eclipse during its two minutes of totality — there's no amount of time to look at the sun that's considered safe, Lopez said.

And to date, there is no cure for solar retinopathy, which refers to the damage to your retina that direct exposure to the sun can cause. Nor will pain be an indicator: solar retinopathy doesn't usually cause any.

If you're lucky, Lopez said, and you didn't look for long, that blurred or distorted vision might — repeat, might — clear up on its own, although that could be several months down the line.

I stared at the sun for 5 minutes and now I can see the Host.

Oh yes, I got IT!!

Also, we don’t need the picture of Capt Obvious to see my new ‘method’ doesn’t work either.

It’s perfectly safe to look at the Sun during totality. But jounalists are just assuming their readers are too stupid to know when that is, so they are telling us that it’s never safe to look.

I bought my glasses the other day, they are called “Sun Catcher” and are supposed to be 100% compliant with whatever the hell specifications the gummint came up with.

I plan on a trip to the Salem, Oregon area - but if I don’t make it, or my car breaks down, or whatever other reason I got em!!

When I was a kid in upstate NY there was an eclipse, we used photo negatives.

Nobody went blind! Amazing!

I’m in Yakima, we’ll have 96% total eclipse, that’s close enough for me.

Im not sure I’d trust some cheapie filter glasses, though they may be OK. A Shade 14 welding helmet filter is a safer bet, especially one with the gold coating.

I’m close to Puyallup, so it will be around the same percentage here.

But hey, a chance in a lifetime to see totality, so I figured what the heck...

Just to understand how serious this can be, I belong to an organization that’s conducting a cruise on the TN River to observe the eclipse. We’re furnishing free eclipse glasses to all participants. It’s a lot like a firing range providing eye and ear protection to all of its shooters.

I thought it was just the opposite. Those bloodsuckers hate the sun and do their dirty work in the dark, smoke filled back rooms of union halls, schools, and the halls of congress.

You should get a good result. I had both done several years ago with excellent results.

Maybe your mouse is busted. That was happening to me a while ago - the mouse was double clicking when I only hit it once.

NASA has suggested viewing glasses made by these companies; some are available on Amazon:

American Paper Optics
Baader Planetarium (AstroSolar Silver/Gold film only)
Rainbow Symphony
Thousand Oaks Optical
TSE 17

Be careful! I’m in Southern Oregon and they’re claiming that I-5 may be shut down for EIGHT hours with one million people traveling the roads that day!

You can look directly at the TOTAL Solar Eclipse. It's about as dangerous as looking at the full moon. The one time I was able to observe totality, I even looked directly at it through an unfiltered telescope. I recommend having an audio recording to call off the time left in totality.

But don't get caught looking when totality ends, or before it begins.
