Scotland has called for Scotch to be defined in U.K. law so its vital whisky industry can be protected after Brexit.

Scottish Economy Secretary Keith Brown has written to officials asking for strong legal protections for the industry, which is worth around £4 billion ($5.3 billion) in exports.

A European Union definition of whisky currently protects sales from substandard products — but EU laws will no longer apply to Britain after the country exits the bloc in 2019. …

Okay; who again is “protectionist”? The EU defines “free trade” as trade they control.

The Left lives in Opposite Land.

Peace is war.
Truth is a lie.
Love is hate.
Free trade is highly regulated.

I’ll step up and volunteer to protect 250 gallons of Talisker to the very last breath in my body.

Just sent it to me freight prepaid.

It’ll be here, I promise.

Famous Grouse was (is?) the most popular scotch whiskey in Scotland. I bought a bottle here in the U.s. and it tasted like ass. I've had better third shelf scotch than that crap.

Which led me to think...do the Scotch keep their better stuff in country and peddle their rotgut outside?

There were *no* laws defining Scotch whisky before the European Union arose? That seems unlikely, given how long the Scots have been making the stuff.

Sounds like just another case of spurious "news" calculated to cause hand-wringing over Brexit.

Of course you are right.

In the olden days in Charlotte.

You could brew single malt “scotch”

“Champaigne”

And, let’s not get into cheeses.

I am not sure what I think about “regional” trademarks legally enforced.

Well, actually I do.

If you want to make single malt “scotch” in LA have at it.

People who want the “real thing” will know how to get it and pay the premium.

if I ever drank cat piss, which I haven't, I think i'd taste like scotch, which I have.

I have heard bag pipes. they suck.

This Keith Brown fellow is in the Scottish National Party, which has socialist ideology (won’t go into nationalism + socialism). Their stance is the oxymoronic notion of an “independent” Scotland being a member of the EU.

Famous Grouse is a cheap scotch. Scotch is one liquor that ages extremely well but tastes horrible until its aged for about 12 years at least. The regular famous grouse is probably 3-5 year average aging (it’s 6th highest volume scotch seller globally, Johnny walker is by far the highest volume scotch seller these days), if that. Unfortunately, that means for a bottle of scotch to taste decent its going to cost at least $40 with the better ones costing $75 to $300. If you want a good bottle (or glass) of scotch, try Macallan 12 (Glenlivit is another good brand that is cheaper than Macallan, not as good, but solid).

Glenlivit 12 is an excellent scotch when paired with a cigar. Good compliment on the smokey flavor. Glenlivit 18 is best taste/price point in the Glenlivit line. It’s a very good scotch at about the right price when you can find it for 80 a bottle.

A collective mark can be registered with WIPO. That is outside of the control of the EU.

That’s the UN, though. The EU was modeled after that and per treaty respects the principles of its charter—which in turn was patterned after the 1936 USSR constitution.

Also, while it’s not on EU soil, it’s on European soil, in Switzerland, which although is not a member of the EU is still greatly influenced by it via “bilateral agreements”.

Not sure what your point is. Are you saying all trademarks should be abolished?
