Famous Grouse was (is?) the most popular scotch whiskey in Scotland. I bought a bottle here in the U.s. and it tasted like ass. I've had better third shelf scotch than that crap.

Which led me to think...do the Scotch keep their better stuff in country and peddle their rotgut outside?

Famous Grouse is a cheap scotch. Scotch is one liquor that ages extremely well but tastes horrible until its aged for about 12 years at least. The regular famous grouse is probably 3-5 year average aging (it’s 6th highest volume scotch seller globally, Johnny walker is by far the highest volume scotch seller these days), if that. Unfortunately, that means for a bottle of scotch to taste decent its going to cost at least $40 with the better ones costing $75 to $300. If you want a good bottle (or glass) of scotch, try Macallan 12 (Glenlivit is another good brand that is cheaper than Macallan, not as good, but solid).
