You can hear the "Star Trek" voice emergency system giving altitude notifications moment by moment.

A little rough, but not that bad. You can hear one of the pilots say “All ist gut” at about 250’.

The MD11 has a relatively high approach speed coupled with limited tail control surfaces (there is an engine taking up space in the vertical stabilizer)
Makes it especially touchy to land, even in good weather.

Had a memorable aborted landing at MIA in an MD11 — when the pilot hit those big old jets, the entire plane shook and overheads opened up and spilled bags around. Since my office at the time overlooked the runway, I saw these occurrences all the time (747s would shake the building on full blast aborted landings). So I knew what was going on and could actually enjoy the moment while everyone else on the plane freaked out. It was pretty cool.

I guess it was the co-pilot operating the steering wheel. I wonder why he/she was turning it so much? I don’t fly planes therefore I don’t understand it........;)

Yep had an aborted MD11 landing over Reagan National early one foggy morning. You are right. When they hit the thrusters its a heart stopper. We must have only been 50 ft off the runway when the pilot changed his mind. It was total pea soup of the window. I was freaking out but my business associate was a former cobra pilot so he was grinning it off.

It was those godd@mn out-of-sync wipers that were tripping me out more than the landing.
