The Government Thinks This Couple Isn't Smart Enough to Be Parents, So It Took Their Kids Away

Eric Ziegler, 38, didn't do a good enough job teaching his son Christopher to wash his hands after going to the bathroom. So the State of Oregon put the boy in foster care.

That's not the only reason the government intervened. But a lengthy story by Samantha Swindler in The Oregonian doesn't shy away from the awful, outrage-inducing truth: The state has taken a couple's children away not because they're abusing or neglecting the kids but because it thinks the parents aren't smart enough to raise them properly.

Ziegler and his partner, Amy Fabbrini, both have below-average IQs—72 and 66, respectively—according to documents provided to The Oregonian. After Christopher was born in 2013, other family members (most significantly, Fabbrini's father, who has a troubled relationship with her) started warning the state's child welfare agency that there were problems.

When the state Department of Human Services began investigating, it found no signs of abuse. But they did find representations of the struggles and frustrations of people with learning disabilities attempting to be parents:

In reports of concerns about the couple's parenting skills, a MountainStar [a nonprofit Oregon group devoted to helping prevent child abuse] worker recalled having to prompt them to have Christopher wash his hands after using the toilet and to apply sunscreen to all of his skin rather than just his face. Fabbrini and Ziegler's attorneys argue these weren't sufficient reasons to keep them from their son.

This year the couple had a second son, Hunter. The state also took custody of him. This time they didn't even wait to see how they'd behave as parents: Fabbrini was still in the hospital when they took the boy.

Oregon's justification for taking Christopher and Hunter away: "limited cognitive abilities that interfere with [their] ability to safely parent."

Well they were not smart enough to get married before having children. Hopefully these kids are adopted to a family with means so that we don’t have to support them. We support way to many. Perhaps they really should do this routinely. Back in the day, I would never say that, but with 20 trillion in debt, we can’t have these people taking money from the system all the time. Bad enough these two adults probably get disability for being dumb. Endless cycle that FINALLY something is being done about it.

What an un-American state to live in. Decent people in Oregon can’t approve of this.

This is an unconscionable overreach by the state.

But, on the other hand, why aren’t two people who have children together getting married?

I remember back in the 80's when it was all the rage to mainstream developmentally disabled kids and adults. L.A. Law even had a couple of DD characters who ended up getting married. The whole thing was treated as a human rights issue.

Now after the liberals encouraged all of these folks to get married, have kids, etc. now they're taking their kids away.

I wish they would make up their minds.

Oregon is not a free state.

No, it isn't. And the fascism has been escalating exponentially over the past few years. Now, children don't need to the permission, or even to notify, parents if they want "transitioning" drugs provided by schools and/or the state.

I read today, on this site, that the average IQ in Somalia is 68. Oregon needs to start IQ testing their Somalian immigrants—and any other immigrant group that practices cousin-marriage—ASAP. Let’s see what happens when they start confiscating Muslim babies.

My father’s parents were deaf from early childood, poorly educated, illiterate, with marginal social and intellectual skills. They were magnificent parents who raised 3 children each of whom became substantial citizens. Their heart was for their children and they were deeply loving parents. Destroying their family would have destroyed the lives of their children. I shudder in horror at the foul evil of which government is capable.

It’s not about money. It’s about government stooges using power they shouldn’t have over the powerless. Fire them if you’re concern is money.

Hi, naps-—

The report said there was no evidence of abuse or neglect, which puts this mother and father ahead of, I’ll guess, 90% of the parents who come under the official purview of the Oregon DHS. Moreover, it says they were working hard and making progress in improving parenting skills, which puts them ahead of most of the other 10%.

You have referred in the past to your belief that God has a plan for your family -— in fact, for “all of us.” I would not be quick to put that family relation -— which is sacred -— in the hands of the omni-incompetent State.

It would be entirely different if there were criminal abuse or neglect. From what we know from the article, there was nothing like that: just some difficulties which, frankly, could be seen in lots of “normal” families, and which can demonstrably be remedied inthis case.

The Catholic Church teaches that parents have natural rights and obligations toward their children which cannot (barring criminal circumstances) be abrogated or usurped by government or any other agency. Moreover, the natural bonds between mothers and fathers and their children are, in some respects, irreplaceable for best childhood development(and I speak as an adoptive parent!).

I would ask you to reconsider your judgment.

[ Ziegler and his partner, Amy Fabbrini, both have below-average IQs—72 and 66, respectively—according to documents provided to The Oregonian. ]

Question: When did they have their IQ tests done and who demanded that they get IQ tests?

Also i have known people who were “intellectuals” high IQs and all, and unsurprisingly “Progressive liberals” who are the crappiest parents ever...

I have also know some people who are a bit dim, but they put in the effort to be good parents.

RAW IQ and parental ability are not a direct correlation.

You can have a dim witted factory workers who works like hell to keep his dimwitted housewife wife and children fed and they are a billion times better parents than two high IQ working parents who abandon their chilren to daycare every day.

After seeing that map it appears that non-Muslims skew the average in the ME
