Shortly after leaving a party on Chappaquiddick Island, Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy of Massachusetts drives an Oldsmobile off a wooden bridge into a tide-swept pond. Kennedy escaped the submerged car, but his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, did not. The senator did not report the fatal car accident for 10 hours. ---SNIP--- Kennedy escaped the car and then dove down in an attempt to retrieve Kopechne from the sunken Oldsmobile. Failing, he stumbled back to the cottage, where he enlisted Gargan and another friend in a second attempt to save Kopechne. The three men were unsuccessful; her body was not recovered. The trio then went to the ferry slip, where Kennedy dove into the water and swam back to Edgartown, about a mile away.

We need to remove Ted Kennedy from Arlington.

Why didn’t the Republicans go after that big fish. What would the Democrats have done?

BS.

He went back to the party to tell his lawyer friends what happened and they formulated a plan to rescue Kennedy from prison.

He needed 10 hours to formulate a story and sober up.

I'll drive off that bridge when I come to it.

How is the water down there Mary Jo?

On July 25, Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, received a two-month suspended sentence, and had his license suspended for a year.

Zackly. He walked past several cottages he could’ve gone to to summon help.

You have to wonder....if Chappaquddick had never occurred...would Teddy have been the primary candidate in 1976 instead Jimmy Carter?

Ted's eternal sentence was more harsh but fitting.

I don’t think he was driving. I think he had her drop him off and left her to her own devices driving back in an unfamiliar, dangerous area.

There is no way that Ted Kennedy could swim a mile.

“Why didn’t the Republicans go after that big fish.”

Agreed. By tarnishing the fish you tarnish his party. Is this additional old evidence that they didn’t want to win.

Also, in the above is says Ted dived back in to save her. I believe we only have Teds testimony to support this.

To put it another way - Mary Jo incidentally drowned.

That’s one of the unanswered questions about Chappaquiddick. Was she driving the car?

There’s a lot we will never know, because of the behavior of the Kennedys. Among other things, they quickly cleaned up the house where they were partying. They evacuated all their people off the island, so that the local investigators never got a chance to talk to them.

There are a lot of questions about Chappaquiddick which will never be answered because the Kennedys obstructed a complete investigation into it.

The apparent truth is that he had been drinking and got out of the car and told MJ to drive over the bridge because he saw a cop. He walked back to the hotel in Edgartwon and didn’t realize that she had gone off the bridge until he got up for breakfast, got a newspaper that was reporting the accident on the headline, and turned white (according to other hotel guests at breakfast). Supposedly, he immediately made a call to his lawyer in New York, then cooked up the story with aides and cousin Gargan and Markham. He wore a neckbrace one day thereafter — when he appeared at the hearing/inquest where his license was suspended. A real hero.

And he continued to destroy the country for another thirty years because Mary Jo’s family took the payoff instead of doing the right thing and holding him accountable.

Tragic.
