California is embarrassing the rest of the country with the amount of solar energy it's producing

California is the poster child for solar energy: in 2016, 13% of the state's power came from solar sources. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, California is in the lead for the cumulative amount of solar electric capacity installed in 2016.

In fact, the California is generating so much solar energy that it is resorting to paying other states to take the excess electricity in order to prevent overloading power lines. According to the Los Angeles Times, Arizona residents have already saved millions in 2017 thanks to California’s contribution.

If we have so much power here, why do we keep getting warnings on hot days to do our laundry in the middle of the night?

Glad I don’t have an electric car, I could only drive it at night - presumably to the laudroma / washateria.

My only question is...what is the true cost per kilowatt hour, without all the subsidies?

Square miles in CA = 164 k. Square miles in RI = 1,200.
Clear days in CA 146. Clear days in RI 98.

DUH! No prize for you!

Yeah. You would think they’d give that money back to Californians who are being robbed by PG&E with $800 electric bills in the summer.
Just boggles the mind.

Can you tell me where I can get solar for free? Please? They all want to sell or lease an outrageously expensive system to me for around $268 a month and put a lien on our mortgage free home. Please tell me where I can get that free solar. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find it.

This is a fake story. Cal has over built power plants and has an excess in power period. There is a State law that they have o have some much capacity.

Crappy reporting to make it look like Solar is a godsend and is the replacement for all other forms of generation.

“There is also a lot of pollution from their production.”

Saw that article yesterday or today. With any manufacturing, generally speaking, efficiencies intended to bring costs down usually cause improvements across the production process. Possibly capturing waste to be reused in previous steps of the process.

Just a thought

We are paying at least .18 cents a kw when it should be 9 cents or less as other states produce it at that price. The price is to subsidize the solar and wind.
It raises the price of all goods and services and jobs are lost due to the companies having to pay more for electric so they do not hire as many people in the state.

It raises your electric bill so high that people cut back on a/c and that in turn results in people suffering and or dying as a result.

Meanwhile the politicians get free everything including a/c.

“How about we all put solar powered water heaters on our roofs. That would greatly reduce our carbon footprints.”

Would that also be known as a rain barrel?

Interesting, I went on the Business Insider page and there’s no mention of it.

I live in Canoga Park..... Here is a family suffering because those in gov’t in a taxpayer paid office with a/c and paid by taxpayers and receiving $138 per day diem plus their large yearly salary and drives in a taxpayer car with a/c thought that raising electric rates higher is a good thing. It is for them as it will help pay for their large pension. It does so at others expense.

Excerpt: CANOGA PARK >> When summer heat rippled through her asphalt neighborhood last year, Maria Jimenez and her three young children sweated in their bottom floor apartment with the A/C off to save cash.

I want to know if Maria and her three offspring are legal citizens.

I want to know how much of our tax dollars she is being given in the form of food stamps, housing, free food at school, medical care and welfare.

I also want to know why her husband isn't paying the electric bill. Where is he?

Yeah, nuclear energy is just great! Ask the people of Kiev or Tokyo about it. Enjoy your Pacific fish!

I live in CA. All this week we’ve been getting flex power alerts where we’re supposed to reduce our power consumption because the doesn’t have enough power. This article is bullcrap.

Wow!!!!

That’s why I posted it. It made absolutely no sense. You have surplus power, you pay other people to use the energy you produce, you still buy power from other states and you still build regular power plants.

It’s no wonder that star is as screwed up as it is.

When well regulated and not put on a tectonic plate subject to earthquakes or regulated by hide bound communists who slip shot everything, nuclear energy is by far the cleanest form of energy. The only emissions are water vapor.

If we could legally reprocess spent uranium in America like they do in much of Europe, particularly France, we would have an endless supply of cheap reliable energy that is safe and emits no CO2.

The point is that the Green Energy idiots are not the least bit concerned about pollution or CO2 which is plant food not pollution. What they care about is power and control!
