Do Poor People Eat More Junk Food Than Wealthier Americans?

SNIP

As nutrition experts point out, it is not the healthiest type of meal since it is typically high in fat and salt. More widely, it’s seen as a key factor in the growing obesity epidemic in the U.S. and throughout the world.

Because it’s considered relatively inexpensive, there’s an assumption that poor people eat more fast food than other socioeconomic groups – which has convinced some local governments to try to limit their access. Food journalist Mark Bittman sums up the sentiment succinctly:

SNIP

Our recently published research examined this assumption by looking at who eats fast food using a large sample of random Americans. What we found surprised us: Poor people were actually less likely to eat fast food – and do so less frequently – than those in the middle class, and only a little more likely than the rich.

I agree. Hamburgers get a bad rap. If you take one apart and spread it around a plate, you have a cube steak, a roll, and a small side salad. How is that evil?

I am tired of everything the left does to separate people in their own self-decided demographic groups.

Has there ever been sustained civil unrest in a nation where the poorest were the most likely to be obese?

I can’t get out of a fast food place for less than $20 - not much less than a decent sit-down place. That’s 5 meals for four if homemade with careful shopping.

“It’s not the job of politicians to improve anyone’s health by telling them how to eat. It is none of their business. I repeat, it is none of them damn business. The exception being free food, i.e. SNAP, provided to people by confiscating my earnings. Then we limit them to beans, rice, meat, bread, potatoes and vegetables. Nothing else.”

Amen.

Leftists do not push sperm-to-worm, single-payer, national health care because they are concerned with the health of poor people. They want it for control of people’s lives. If they make you dependent on government health care, they can dictate what you eat because if you eat unhealthily it will cost “the government” more money. So leftist bureaucrats will want to regulate, tax, control, and ban certain food products they do not approve of. If that doesn’t work, they’ll regulate food providers who don’t toe the line out of business.

We’ll get VA type health care along with VA cafeteria-type food choices. While driving a golf cart sized car.

But it’s for the children.

Is it just about who sells it?

Yes.

It is like when they sneer that "fast food is unhealthy".

Since when does the time to make something have anything to do with it's health properties?

Plus, if they eat mostly starches they will have wildly fluctuating blood sugars and insulin levels, so then they feel they have to eat something every 2 hours, like a baby.
So when they say they are “hungry” (although obese), technically they probably are.
The “hungry” children that people claim exist probably ate a starchy junk food meal 2 hours ago. When you are getting NO nutrients, you’ll go on craving and craving.

Hubbys daughter and her husband showed up at my door one morning wanting to borrow $100 to help pay their PG&E bill. They both had ginormous cups of Starbucks in their hands. I told them they should have put that $15 toward their PG&E bill. My coffee runs about 3 cents a cup.

Of course they do - junk food is far cheaper than the stuff they sell at Whole Foods.

Its about who sells the food, becuase the Leftists/Socialists are gearing up for legal action against "Big Bad Food".

The "poor" that are obese are both, because they make poor decisions.

No "sin tax" will save them from themselves so long as they do not pay their own way.

When I was a kid, my family went through a rough patch. There were 8 of us. My dad worked 3 jobs and as a family we had a 4th, a small plot of land that we used to grow vegetables to sell. We rarely if ever ate fast food. Every meal was made from scratch. None of us were overweight, with the exception of my dad, who had a knee problem from a war injury. It prevented him from being able to exercise for very long. Despite his knee, he was a very hard worker, and we pulled together as a family. We eventually dug out of those really difficult times. I will never forget those days. They are a part of me.

That’s why the Marines are always Marines. It is very hard. The harder it is, the more you respect yourself and what you have done.

The “that was easy” button being pushed by hildabeast was sooo apropos. Enslaving, literally enslaving.

It burns me when I see them spending $20-$30 bucks on junk at gas stations where it is twice the price of the grocery store.

Maybe it’s the cheese that is added that pushes it over the edge.

My granddaughter was caring for a woman with dementia. Her kids and grandkids want her to eat nutritionally and they even send over meals but she just wants sandwiches.

She loved my GD because she just added lettuce and tomato or avocado or green chile, and cheese and gave her fresh fruit for dessert. She felt like she appeased all concerned.

Since GD left to do an internship they haven’t found anyone else that the woman likes. They work about half a day and they have to send them home.

Junk food is cheap.

High fructose corn syrup for the loss.

Don’t see welfare queens at the whole foods.
