Given the amount of prescription medications Americans take, the quantity of OTC remedies consumed and the massive amount of processed trash food eaten, there's no real surprise here.

Heck, just the crap we consume and pollute ourselves with eating processed foods alone is enough to boost these statistics.

And now they let 3rd world shytholes contribute to the mess by importing their filth for Americans to feast upon. Chinese fish from one of their fish farms anyone?

OK, rant off before I get carried away on this...

I didn’t say I favored prohibition, but alcohol is very clearly bad for health in many ways.

Not a drinker, but would definitely say alcohol consumption has gone up astronomically in my circles...I am odd duck out most of the time ... and some of my girlfriends routinely go for a “ liver cleanse “

I don’t think organic is any safer. I think it is a marketing gimmick. My parents and my brother and I went organic for several years back in 1965. I became a veterinarian and toxicologist and could find no basis for the claims that organic was any healthier. Organic is subject to serious fungal invasion and as we know fungi produce some very detrimental compounds called mycotoxins, aflatoxin being one of the worst.

I got that - I was just pointing out how prohibition leads to unintended consequences. I don’t know if drinking is worse now.

It a matter of risk benefit. I take no prescription medications. It’s still my choice.

People from Asia often have lower amounts of the enzymes needed to metabolize alcohol. My guess is that would included American Indians. They should go easy on alcohol.

Given the liver's job and the average American's diet nowadays, I'm not surprised.

As far as the liver is concerned, this "better living through chemistry" world we've created is a tough place to work.

I've seen this first hand while re-learning how to feed my dogs.

My dogs both had some serious health issues that were greatly improved, if not totally resolved, by changing them over to an all organic, whole food, homemade diet that cancer patients are encouraged to follow.

In hindsight, this makes sense to me now. Try it and see for yourself.

Eating food that is as "close to God" as you can get it, and then made with love in your own kitchen, has to be better than the stuff in a can, box or bag that's made by a machine in a factory somewhere with the goal of maximum shelf life as top priority.

Tastes better, too...

One question about the assumption of unequal access to healthcare: what exactly is meant by healthcare in regards to treating liver cancer and whatever pre-cancer liver diseases? Does this include liver transplant?

One more question: if most cases of liver cancer are preventable by a combination of going to the doctor for regular checkups and following a prescribed treatment plan, what in this age of universal access to medical care in the USA can force people to: 1) get regular checkups; and 2) follow the medical treatment plan? Really, this all begs the question.

People with liver cancer are not transplant candidates since those cancers metastasize so readily.

Most cancer is not preventable. Most cases occur by chance events such as mutations, deletions, insertions and such genetic changes associated with advanced years. In general cancer is a disease of the older population, not just in humans, but in animals too.

All I know is that it sure seems like the generation or two before me don’t drink anywhere near like what used to be. However, I think it did go up some during the Obama era judging by liquor store crowds.

Every cancer is different. Some are treatable, others not.

Marxist leaders, killers, and exterminators are all the same and they do drive people to drink. The former USSR had the highest alcoholism rate in the world.

If available, you would have to look up the statistics, or counts, in the previous generations. I’m not sure they are available.
