Karen had a great voice, but most Carpenters songs set my teeth on edge. They sound overrehearsed and overproduced.

Two good names right there, Donna Summer and Racine, Wisconsin’s own Chi Coltrane! (Who actually had a much bigger career in Europe.)

When Ike and Tina Turner played at Troy, I was the nighttime student switchboard operator.

After the performance, she called the switchboard from a campus phone and asked to make a long distance call. I had to tell her that we were not allowed to make long distance calls and she was actually really nice.

I should have just placed the call anyway.

“Believe it or not”, a youngster by the name of Fiona Apple did a cover of “Across the Universe” that was better than the Beatles version.

> To me, she [Janis Joplin] was just a rough voice screaming into a microphone. <

True that. But Janis was unique, simply unique. There was nothing quite like her, before or since. She’s like that weird girlfriend you once had. Weird, but unforgettable.

before we got to the obvious one; Whitney Houston

One would think Whitney would be obvious. However, based on many of the responses, somehow, some don't see it that way. Can't begin to understand why.

Janis Joplin

heart, soul, all in.

For the song she sang, no one could touch her.

They were great. A lot of ABBA songs are very difficult so sing well.

I’d add in Imelda May, Melody Gardot and maybe Halsey Reinhart. Reinhardt’s cover of Seven Nation Army is amazing.
