IIRC, we planted top crop bush beans several years ago. Once we have more than enough green beans canned, we let them go and harvest the dry beans.

Some of those we eat, and some we plant the next year for more bush beans. We tried pole beans one year, but they did poorly compared to the bush beans.

I have also let beans and peas go to dry pods to plant the next year. I have planted bush beans this year: Etna, Pinto, Navy, Great Northern and early contender. Am trying to see what does best. Also, I live on a mountain ridge at 8,500 ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies so the growing season is short and soil is shallow and rocky. I have terraced areas on a slope that I have composted for years. Finally getting good soil.

I forgot that I also have two rows of potatoes that are breaking the surface and I have worked the soil to “hill” them to get more production from the roots.
