I Bake New Neighbors Bread To Welcome Them, And They Never Say Hello to Me Again

I am glad I am this old so I don’t have to live in this cold, uncaring world for 50 more years. Many Americans appear to have become shallow, immoral, intolerant, and hateful.

Let me tell you about my Southern California neighborhood. I have lived in this one for 22 years. I don’t know anyone, but it’s not for lack of trying. Each time a new neighbor moves in I bake a loaf of bread and take it to them. They thank me at the door and then close it. That is the last I see of them other than when they go to their cars.

One neighbor was pregnant and her husband was employed, so I gave her my phone number just in case she needed anything. She thanked me and didn’t give me her number. We spoke over the fence occasionally, but not in any way that would turn us into buddies or even casual friends. They moved.

Our newest neighbors dropped a card on our front porch before their bread was baked to tell us their names and gave us their phone number. I still have it four years later. I baked the bread and the mister thanked me at the door. I have never met the Mrs. in person.

I hosted a coffee klatch and made up fliers and put them on the 12 nearest homes. I got donuts, cut up fruit, and made coffee and tea. Six people came, drank the tea, and no one touched the donuts or fruit. They chatted about who all used to live here in this neighborhood over the years, said thank you and left. No one asked a single question of me. I have never been to their homes or had a conversation with any of them since.

Oh I am sorry they do not have room. I have already sorted some toys and a few pool towels and started the washer ...I will get to my adoption place this weekend. I even have an extra bag of food stockpiled when it was buy one-get one time.

Big Gun Show this weekend near the same place so I will be right nearby!

My dog has 3 big “sisters”( my daughters ) who mail or bring toys every time they visit. I think they know I will appreciate their thoughtfulness!

You know I’ve been down to Louisiana twice and I absolutely love your state.
Friend of mine is going down there tomorrow for some Red Fish for the next few days. I heard there’s a 5 fish limit.

Between the cooking, fishing, and beverage choices, I’d say he’ll have a blast.

When I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s we lived on a dead end street. About 24 houses and about 20 of the families were very friendly. The kids played together. We had holiday parties at each other’s houses. We even all pitched in and rented out the local skating rink for a night for a private party.

Now, I know few of my neighbors. Many of the houses in the neighborhood are rentals and people only seem to stay for six months or a year.

Our circle of friends is comprised of people from our church with whom we have formed “life groups”. We meet once a week for Bible study and fellowship. We share food, stories, advice, prayers and tears. While families still come and go, there are usually 10 or so in the group and we have a core of about 5 long term member families.

I guess it is part of the culture. I don’t really know or trust most of my neighbors, but I would trust the folks in my life group with my home or my life.

You nailed it.

Growing up in the 70s, you had to go outside. Nothing but soap operas and game shows on daytime TV. No computer. No Netflix. No video games. No cell phones. You had to get on your Huffy and bike to a playground or other hangout to meet other kids. Always a mother home to put a broom in your hand if you hung around the house.

I grew up in mountains of Kentucky and ha d pretty good neighbors except for one family. Long story short they wanted to rule the neighborhood and my Dad ended up nearly being murdered by them. We moved and new neighbors were nice got along fine.

When I married I wanted no neighbors period. My wife came from street of block parties, BBQ’ cookouts, parties etc... and couldn’t understand why I wanted no neighbors.

When I married my wife our first house was a subdivision had some good neighbors, had a bad one, we had words because I put up a fence 6 inches off the line on me to protect my young kids from his chow. Finally showed him the pins in the ground and another neighbor he was complaining to about it finally told him that the fence was way over on my property and pointed out the survey pins again and he let it go.

We moved and bought house in mountains with one close neighbor and it’s my wife’s mom so I am a happy camper and wife is close to her mom.

One or two bad neighbors leave a bad taste in people’s mouth. They just don’t want the aggravation of dealing with a rear end.

Lived in Southern California for most of my life. Most of the people over their are fools who only care about themselves. Moved to friendly state of Arizona 10 years ago. Would never go back to that hell hole.

Then a new family moved in, retired AF

What's the deal with Air Force vets?

The ones I met at ft. Leonard wood in the late 1990's were pasty and anorexic. The Navy Seabees were cool and the Marines were okay once the locals beat the crap out of them in bar fights (most had just graduated boot Camp where they were thought they could whip anybody and anything).

You have nothing to complain about.

I ain't complaining about bupkis except that those who live in SoCal now are not folks like you...but transplants. Not all of them 'desirables'.

When I do something for someone and they don’t respond, I say really loudly *You’re welcome!*

Often I’ll get an embarrassed response.
