a-Nehisi Coates, the celebrated public intellectual, faced a setback in his attempt to introduce racial diversity to the world of comic books when Marvel announced that Black Panther & The Crew, which Coates had been writing with Yona Harvey, would be canceled after six issues. Only two issues have been published thus far; The Verge, which first reported the news, said Coates cited “poor sales” as the reason for the cancellation.

Poor sales? Lack of (creative) talent.

When your opponent is the KKK every issue, it tends to get boring.

Comics featuring black leads never sell well. Look what happened to DC’s Milestone line...you remember Milestone...right?

Fanboys can’t buy every comic that Marvel puts out and movie goers and tv viewers don’t read comics (or many books).

The Walking Dead is still the leader in driving audiences to comic book stores (where they can buy cast figures of the characters, actual comic/compendium sales still don’t reflect the tv audience ratings).

"Diversity" shoved down peoples throat doesn't sell well.

Neither does sexual perversion

Every superhero character in that comic was invented by white males.

Cultural appropriation.

I guess there has not been a lot of consumer interest in 85 IQ “superheroes”.

...and the thing is - there is usually NO WAY to turn back.

So Marvel decides now that straight white males are really NOT the scum of the Earth. Well, too late, they’ll never be trusted again by their fan base. No different than, if tomorrow, Target decided to go back to ‘men’ and ‘women’ on their bathroom signs (rather than ‘whatever’) - people, especially women, would be in no hurry to rush back to their stores.

“the celebrated public intellectual”
Their tags for people are an important indication. It’s always a lie, but it’s what they want the public to believe.

Shouldn’t that’ve been Black Panther & The Posse...or maybe The Homeboys?

Tiny bit of good news to start the week.

I’m not a fan of organized boycotts. But millions of consumers can’t be wrong ...

Actually the Black Panther comic has been selling very well. Well enough they gave it two spinoffs. This one failed, the other seems to be doing alright.
