Summer Sweat: Hollywood Braces for Possible Worst Box Office in Decade (450 million in losses)

Hollywood may experience one of the worst slumps at the box office in the last decade this summer as Americans grow tired of the seemingly endless number of sequels and big-budget tentpoles churned out by the film industry.

Multiple reports by the the Hollywood Reporter show box office revenues are on track to decline by five percent this summer season when compared with last year, and could drop by as much as ten percent.

In real dollars, that could calculate out to a net loss of $450 million for Hollywood’s film industry, with summer earnings for movies expected at about $4 billion, which would make box office performance during this year’s summer season the worst in at least ten years.

The second weekend of summer hints at trouble to come, as Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s pricey tentpole King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is set to debut to around $25 million in its opening weekend, a disastrous projection when compared with its reported $175 million budget, before marketing costs.

the real test will come later this summer, when Paramount trots out Transformers: The Last Knight and Disney releases Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, both of which represent the fifth entries in their respective, decade-long franchises.

There appear to be at least a couple of bright spots this summer, Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama Dunkirk are expected to perform well for Universal and Warner Bros., respectively.

But some executives are already blaming the upcoming season’s over-saturation with sequels for the projected decline in box office.

“Some of the tent poles are just not as strong this year,” 20th Century Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson told the Times. “Pirates of the Caribbean? It’s the fifth one. Transformers? It’s the fifth one.”

Never understood why they keep pumping out garbage while movies like “Lion” are ignored. They underestimate the American people.

As long as they keep making movies as political statements, about half of potential viewers are going to stay away.

Hell or High Water was great, but most of the films were really uneven last year..

Most of what is produced is fit only for “straight to DVD”.

Even Netflix cannot keep up with the garbage.

Why go to theaters? There are much better tv series on and you can binge watch, pause for snacks etc. Unless you are dating, or have little kids, why go?

Try making a movie instead of a CGI comic book episode.

No problems with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’s making tons of money, and I haven’t even seen it yet.

It has nothing to do with the Trumpian revolution, or with Hollywood’s refusal to recognize that not all of its audiences cherish queers, dykes, mouthy black racists, and klutzy, stupid white men.

I’d love to see Dicaprio reduced to a net worth of $5 million and an income of $150K/yr.I wonder if he’d commit suicide if things ever got that desperate for him.

Why go to theaters? Expensive. Just wait half a year and rent at Red Box. Watch at home. Gee, I am such a cheapskate. Simply get the movie while at the grocery store.

I would not hire Guy Richie to run a Subway franchise, let alone a $175 million film. He has had SO many flops! It's like hiring Carly fiorina to run Google. I just don't get Hollyweird.

What it is, is too many movies and sequels relying on CGI and non-existent story lines.

I have just about reached my limit on DC Comics and Marvel Comics movies. What was refreshing and new is now just down right boring and predictable.

Not too long ago I watched Brad Pitt's movie “Allied”, it looked pretty good. Upon finally seeing the whole movie I was disappointed, it could have been so much better.

Once great TV shows that are made into movies are terrible. They either try to take something that was serious and make it into a comedy or just take what was a great show and butcher it and make it unwatchable.

Hollywood has only themselves to blame. I was a kid who grew up in the 1960’s and we had great and solid movies of all types to choose from all the time. I saw all kinds of films and I almost look it at that period as the last great gasp of creativity that the old Hollywood had. Everything that came later, with a few exceptions, become crude and appealed to the lowest common denominator.

Once upon a time Hollywood strived to tell real stories and a lot of them made you think, no more.

I think Dunkirk will be the shocker of the summer. It arrives at some point where people in the UK because of BREXIT...need a reminder about where they came from and why they are different from any other society in Europe.

Hollywood has become McDonalds. In an effort to appeal to massive international audiences, movies have become mediocre, neither bad but not really good either. At my age, I long ago stopped going to the theaters, preferring instead to watch movies at home but lately, I don't even do that. Nothing looks good.

It's not that I am engaging in any sort of political boycott against Hollywood, it's just that their product of endless reboots and sequels have stopped being interesting.

These days my wife and I will just find a TV series we hadn't watched before to binge on. Lately it's been Game of Thrones. Hours upon hours of entertainment that looks good on my 65" 4k.

Going to the movies is a much fun as shopping at Target, being forced to listen to Michael Moore express hated for traditional Americans, and having a tooth pulled.

And paying for the privilege...

Hollywood liberal elites make a few films for fellow liberal elites and lots of violent ‘no dialog’ stupid stuff for democrat victim groups and teenagers. Maybe it'll be better when the Chinese buy out Hollywood - can't be worse.

Why go to theaters? Expensive.

I think teens and young adults who live at home with their parents will always want to go to movie theaters.
