Last Man Standing canceled by ABC after 6 seasons
Entertainment Weekly ^ | May 10, 2017 | James Hibberd

Last Man Standing has finally fallen.

Tim Allen’s sitcom has been canceled by ABC after six seasons.

The long-running comedy has been something of an anomaly. Due to modest ratings, Last Man Standing has been considered “on the bubble” for a renewal every season since it launched in 2011. Yet the Friday night show always managed to squeak into another year — until now.

The show’s final season averaged 8.1 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49.

No word yet on Last Man Standing‘s time slot companion on Friday nights, Dr. Ken, which is also on the bubble for a pickup.

You’re right. There’s only so many fresh stories that can be done with the same characters in the same location.

I like the show but I’ve had my doubts about the conservatism.

After all, basically Mike is the conservative who in many ways “gets a lesson” to be less lock-step in his views and more tolerant, etc. And his lock-step conservative youngest starts turning into a flake complete with “folk” singing guitar. Otherwise there really aren’t any conservative characters outside his boss.

It seems only sometimes is conservative point allowed to “win”.

That Canadian hippie idiot bastard-sire is super annoying, and so often seems the “reasonable” guy albeit out there. Sometimes he gets his, but oftentimes Mike is made to stand down.

Ya shows jump the shark after a while.

Long time cast members start leaving; on shows with kids, the kids grow up, and sometimes are replaced or share air time with new kids , such as cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch final season.

I agree in general, that any show will run its course after a period of years.

They run several episodes every night on both the Hallmark Channel and Country Music Television (CMT.)

The show made fun of leftist knuckleheads.

Can’t have that, especially now with the left gone mad and trying to silence ALL conservative voices, from TV shows to guest speakers. . .cowards all.

Conservatives on show

Mike
His boss
His oldest daughter
His youngest daughter
His ditzy assistant.

Some time he wins and sometimes he loses. But he always gets back and pitches again. They are a church going Christian family with a real Christmas, a flagpole and discussion about what are values.

I love it.

Most shows do run out of gas around Season 5 or 6. Writers have run out of ideas; actors seem to be jaded and going through the motions. Several exceptions come to mind, though. The writers seemed to have planned out a multi-year story arc from beginning to end before the series even launched. See “Damages” with Glenn Close; “Suits”; and “Mad Men.” They all have their down points in the seasons, but overall have nice trajectories beginning-to-end. All deal with human tragedy.

Sounds like "Blue Bloods." A pious, unabashed three-generation cop family having dinner together every Sunday, saying grace, and discussing challenging values questions. It is SUCH a breath of fresh air!

That’s too bad. There is very few shows I like on regular TV and this was one of them. While not as good as Home Improvement for Tim Allen, it was still pretty good.

The only other show I don’t mind watching is The Middle. Patricia Heaton is also a good conservative and the show focuses on life of a misfit family in the middle of America.

They are about to wrap up its 8th season and IMO, has been one of its better seasons. The Middle has been renewed for another season and it will be interesting on the direction it goes with the kids on the verge of being out on their own and possibly start their own families.

Uh uh, his oldest (now married to her kid’s hippie sire) shows lots of lib stripes, often sparring with her dad over such issues.

Middle doesn’t count because she’s just a ditz. As is her now-husband “ditzy assistant”. They don’t know and/or care at all.

I like watching it but I’m not sure if they’re really giving us back-handed compliments. It’s still as if Mike is the jerk/rube for bringing up conservative POV most of the time.

Bottom line is Allen’s character was too conservative....well, conservative period.

I do admit I couldn’t stand the new oldest daughter the liberal guy who took over the show brought in after the first year. She was a lib with a lib husband. I can imagine that may have cost some viewers. But the bottom line is Hollywood will NOT put conservative material on the air.

I strongly believe that most shows should end after 5-7 seasons. my reasoning is that between the 5th and 7th season they loose something and I would rather see the talent working on a new project.

I agree. There are only so many variations on a theme one can do on any show. After awhile one starts noticing themes and situations from other sitcoms or dramas from the past. I usually lose interest after 5 or so seasons. I thought NCIS' best years were seasons 1-6. Now the show is limping along to season 15 and is still highly rated. The Simpsons will probably make it to 30 years before it's done, if it ever is.
