Seeking Cell Phone Insurance Advice
Self | May 10, 2017 | PJ-Comix

Well, the good news is that my wife and I have officially entered the 21st century today since our new Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge phones arrived today. I also ordered a couple of glass screen protectors for them. I will also be getting cases. And I am also interested in getting insurance for them. Therefore I am asking for advice on the best/cheapest cell phone insurance plans. Here is what I need covered:

1. Damage to cell phone.

2. Loss of cell phone.

3. Theft of cell phone.

I seem to remember Laura Ingraham about a year ago advertising for what sounded like good cell phone insurance. If anybody out there knows which insurance it was, please let me know the name plus any details on coverage.

what happens to old cell phones?

They get recycled to Venezuela. That's where ours are going.

I got a Galaxy S7 Edge a couple of months ago and have been very happy with it. Installing a screen protector was difficult though because of the curved screen.

Check with your homeowner’s insurance and see what it will cost to schedule your cell phones. It is usually much cheaper than any cell phone insurance.

Ditch the screen protectors, all the high price phones use “gorilla glass” that makes scratches almost impossible “in normal use”. Yes, a nail will scratch gorilla glass.

Gorilla glass also mitigates cracks, doesn’t prevent.

buy something similar to the below to further mitigate glass fracture.

Agree 100%. My phone gets bumped around in my shop and on job sites fairly regular, and as I stated up thread, the only thing the Gorilla Glass didn’t like was hot steel from welding. On my last phone, an iPhone 5, the screen had a few places where very tiny pieces of steel had melted into the screen. Other than that, like you said, a nail would scratch it, but a person would almost have to try to put a scratch in it.

I would suggest purchasing used phones off of eBay. Got a pristine IPhone 5s for $120 and an i6 like new for $300. Coming off some entry androids that drove me crazy. I had resisted even getting smartphones but I will concede they are pretty neat.

What I like about the Iphones is their similarity to the iPad I am using right now.

Two new Otterbox covers ordered and in the mail.

Although I have all three under a Verizon contract I was told it is possible to insert your own SIM cards and get the Straight Talk monthly cards (like Tracfone) and use out of a contract although I am not sure that really saves any money. It might be worthwhile to look into unlocked phones if you want to change carriers. I’m not an expert in that area.

In the meantime try not to drop the phones or into the toilet and you are probably good to go until you get a decent cover. My $0.02.

and landed flat on some grass...inches from the sidewalk. That was the moment that I decided I better wait for the screen protectors to arrive.

These are the kinds of moments we pay attention to as we get older. We learn to listen when the Universe is trying to get our attention.
