Seeking Cell Phone Insurance Advice
Self | May 10, 2017 | PJ-Comix

Well, the good news is that my wife and I have officially entered the 21st century today since our new Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge phones arrived today. I also ordered a couple of glass screen protectors for them. I will also be getting cases. And I am also interested in getting insurance for them. Therefore I am asking for advice on the best/cheapest cell phone insurance plans. Here is what I need covered:

1. Damage to cell phone.

2. Loss of cell phone.

3. Theft of cell phone.

I seem to remember Laura Ingraham about a year ago advertising for what sounded like good cell phone insurance. If anybody out there knows which insurance it was, please let me know the name plus any details on coverage.

Um...no. The apps I can use with the better phone will save me MORE that what the better phone will cost me.

In specific instances, that might be the case, but I believe for the vast majority, it is not. My wife runs her business from her phone, and she does fine with her new phone. And yes, we compared it to my sons S7, ran all her stuff just as well.

In most cases, by the time you lose or break your phone there will be newer models available, enabling you to replace your lost or broken phone for a new one off Ebay for a fraction of the original price. Cell phone insurance is a waste of money IMHO.

Forget $500, the new Samsungs are close to $900.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge are now down to $480. Via T-Mobile I pay $20 per month each for 2 years or $40 for both phones. HOWEVER, using special couponing apps I should be able to earn at least that much back by having those phones so in a way they are FREE or at lest net FREE.

“I don’t dare use these cell phones until AFTER the glass screen protectors arrive.”

I’ve never used those screen protectors, and my screens have held up VERY well without getting scratched. The material the screens are made of these days is very tough stuff! I know, because I’m pretty tough on my phones. The one thing the screens seem to be defenseless against are sparks of molten metal landing on them while welding or grinding steel. Yes, I know this from experience...

“phoneflakes...”

Excellent! I know of a phoneflake, the 20 something year old daughter of a guy I have to interact with on a weekly basis. His daughter is constantly dropping her phone in the toilet!

Good point plus the S7 Edge is supposed to be water resistant or at least up to 5 feet underwater for 30 minutes so just in case I accidentally drop it in the toilet.....

I’m an experienced smartphone user who has had a smartphone since 2002, before they were even known as a thing.

Buy a lightly used phone on eBay in like new condition and never pay more than $300. Usually one generation behind on whatever flagship phone will run about that. It will run ALL the same apps as the new phone. Screw the insurance. If you lose it, buy another one. If you break the screen, get it repaired for >$100.

Add up the cost of the insurance vs what repairs cost. It’s for suckers AND it will leave you without a phone during the time of the insurance claim.

We have bought our last two phones at Sam’s Club and got the Square Trade insurance though Sam’s. $99.00

We have been very happy with the company.

Our daughter is a klutz with her phone and we have had to replace her phone three times. We even had a protective case for her phone.

They replace the phone with a used phone if they can but the phones we have gotten are like new.

The replacement phone cost you $25 dollars regardless of the new cost of the phone and arrives about two days after your report the loss.

You have to return your damaged phone in a paid shipping box on receipt of the replacement phone.

It’s always cheaper to take the risk and not buy insurance.

Especially Obamacare. BTW, how did health insurance ever end up to be confused with health care?

They aren’t that fragile, I use a case and screen protector to keep them from getting marred but I have carried naked phones in the past, they get ugly but survived.

If you get insurance from the carrier, you will pay through the nose. I think there are some non-carrier insurance options for less but never used one of them, google should lead you to them and reviews about their services.

Hope you like your phone, I just about bought the S7 when it was on sale but ended up getting a mid ranger with a really big battery.

Check the credit card agreement, you may already be insured.

I'm now thinking of foregoing the cell phone insurance. As for the face plate protector, I know someone who accidentally dropped his Galaxy S7 face down on tile. The protector shattered but the S7 screen remained intact.

BTW, use of Checkout 51, Ibotta, and similar couponing rebate coupons should cover the cost of the 2 S7s I just got. I am big on stuff like that. In fact today I again bowled 2 games free. Since I am getting 2 FREE games 5 days per week via Kids Bowl Free. The kids I got it for are unable to use it until June but for a one-time payment of $26, I and two other adults can bowl the 2 free games each day Mon-Fri sans kids. It started April 15 and good until end of August. Oh, and I invested in a pair of $19 bowling shoes to save the $4 shoe rental.

Your regular home owners or renters insurance might cover them.

Doesn't the typical homeowner's policy have a deductible? Five hundred...a thousand? I think mine is $500.

Thanx for everybody's advice. And for those of you especially with kids check out KIDS BOWL FREE. I'm not a kid but I am also bowling free (after an initial small payment). I highly recommend buying bowling shoes to save on the shoe rental.

I have had insurance on my phones. They are used for work. Twice I’ve had to have phones replaced. Once due to a linebacker running into me. The second is when it fell off my motorcycle on an interstate.

Sure the deductible is high, but they replaced them both the next day and had them shipped to my hotel.

If you are clumsy or you are working in unusual locations, it is worth it.

I think the deductible is up to you. Of course your premium is less with a large one.

The very first week my iPhone 4 was released, I got one. When I got home, I promptly dropped into a mug of coffee. I couldn’t do that again if I tried. It was a perfect drop, all net...no rim.

You should have seen the grief that Verizon gave me.

For an iPhone, I’d just buy AppleCare.

A friend had the insurance sold by Verizon. The deducible on this plan was equal to the screen replacement cost.

If you have T-Mobile, they just came out with a new coverage plan you may want to look into.

Bummer. Hopefully you were able to retrieve all your data some way. I remember when the 4 came out, and I got one that week too. I wound up giving it to my wife that week, as she really liked it and I still couldn’t quite part with my Blackberry yet, so I waited until the 5 came out.
