What do you say? Is it the new Blues mobile or what?

My father bought it new in early 1955 and drove it as his business car for a couple of years and then sold it to my grandfather who lived with us on the farm. He was getting senile and would coast along at 30 on the main roads with 50 limits and then go 60 through the little towns with 25 limits. So he stopped driving and the car sat for a year of so and it was sold just before I turned 16. My parents decided they wanted me to live a while longer I guess so my main vehicle was a 1961 International Scout with a little inline 4 tractor motor and a handful of horsepower.

The 300 was really cool and my mother would drive me to school in it when I was in elementary school. Sometimes I’d get impatient and take my left foot and push her right foot to the floor and the car would downshift into low. Our upper field had a grassy worn path a little longer than 1/8 and I would get it up to 80 in low gear before I had to back off.

My very first car, bought with my very own money, was a 1956 Cadillac Sedan.

Within a month of owning it, I just had to know.
So we headed out to the countryside and on Rte 12
in Southern Michigan between Niles and New Buffalo.
I put the hammer down.

When the needle crossed the line just past the 100MPH mark,
I stopped looking down and just stared at the road.
So I have no exact idea of how fast we were going.

But well over 100, and in truth it was smooth as could be.

Those fence posts and light poles did start to kind of "run together."

...if only I still had that car...

Yes! You shouldn't have to have the key to roll the window up.

Stopping distance of a ‘56 Cadillac going 100 MPH is measured in parsecs.

The police special probably had a 312 Y Block, Ford’s Y Block engine was the first OHV offering, to replace the venerable Flathead V8. A 292 with straight pipes is one of the nicest sounding engines around. It has the same firing order as the Flathead, 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2, as the good Lord intended.

That was the first production 300 horsepower car. In its first year! I’m sure it would be worth a small fortune in any restorable condition, though the dual quad carburetors would suck gasoline like anything.

I did a lot of “not smart” things back then.

As long as you don’t have to stop or turn real fast, you’re good to go.

I paid $400 for that car.

If I had it today in running condition
it would be worth at least $20,000.

Fully restored = $30,000+.

My favorite is the 57 Fairlane 500.Damn good looking car. I guess I watched the blockbuster Thunder Road with its star studded cast one too many times.

The coolest car we ever had when I was growing up was a 55 Olds 88. It was a very pretty metallic green color. I think it would probably have a similar value today.

Ah... but mine had something extra special.

It was covered in Gray Fur.
As in Velvetex instead of body paint.
