Good for you! At my age and after what I’ve paid in, I’ll take everything I’ve earned.
I have a friend who can barely walk due to agent orange. He told me someone said to him “You mean they give you xxxx amount of dollars a month?”
He replied “They don’t GIVE me a damned thing! I earned it.”
Hubby is a Vietnam vet and has never taken anything from government. He came home and got a job with benefits and never even used the VA. Not once.
We both worked our rears off to support our family and do things right. We stayed in a house (even though we could afford a McMansion) and paid it off. Now both retired we pay taxes all year long and send them a huge check on April 15th. . Just doesn’t seem right somehow.
