The Tennessee teacher who was arrested last week after spending five weeks on the run with his 15-year-old student planned to take the girl to Mexico to start a new life, prosecutors allege.
Tad Cummins, 50, was arrested in northern California last week in a cabin near Cecilville, California, where he was hiding out with 15-year-old Elizabeth Thomas.
The pair vanished from their hometown of Columbia, Tennessee, on March 13 sparking a nationwide manhunt and Amber Alerts in several states.
Prosecutors in Sacramento, where he is facing kidnapping charges, claimed on Monday the teacher had test driven a boat from San Diego to Mexico with the intention of later taking Elizabeth on the same route to evade police.
It was not immediately clear if the practice run was carried out before or after the pair vanished on March 13.
Once across the border, he may have taken her even further in to South America, they said.

I was that victim once. The perp went even younger after me, down to preschool girls. He was found with lifesized preschool girl dolls in his closet along with child porn. Arrested on many counts with his students, but only got his wrist a little slapped, never saw jail time.
Just like I thought, she was a WILLING participant.

I figured from the beginning that he wanted to take her to Mexico. Lucky for them both, he didn’t get that done. Some areas of Mexico, it’s very dangerous to be a middle-aged Gringo traveling with (or running off with) a young, nubile girl who most likely would have been assaulted and kidnapped from her ‘Abuelo’ or Grandad. There would have been hush money to be paid once they found out who this couple were. He only had access to about $4500 liquid cash during this misadventure. His wife had noticed the amount missing from their family account.
It’s still a disgusting abuse of power, and still illegal.
Sexual predators have lured vulnerable kids since time immemorial.

That would be pretty tough to do... Mexico doesn’t take illegal immigrants lightly.
Non-native born citizens can’t buy property. Also can’t become voting citizens.
