I bought and hooked-up a Linksys E-1200 wifi router ($30) 2 1/2 years ago and everything worked fine.
I only needed it for my home ASUS laptop but since have added a wireless printer, Wii U gaming system and Sling TV with ROKU stick, all which work off the router.
Lately I'll just all of a sudden lose wifi signal. I reboot the router and it'll work fine again but the outages are happening more frequently.
Is it time for a new router?
I don't want to spend a ton of money. Should I buy a new $30 Linksys router and just expect 2 1/2 years of use?
Thanks for your help.
Borrow someone's....
It's tough to trouble shoot without objective data.
The transformer is cool to the touch.
Additionally with the App, you can set up your router to not be bumping up against others in the neighborhood for better results by just changing the channel on your wifi router only (usually 1-14). Have it as far as possible on both sides from others. Do not need to adjust any other devices they will adapt immediately. ;)
Routers don’t have venting systems like many electronics, they dissipate heat just through surface area and thus wear out quickly. Two and a half years from a 3o buck router is about what you’d expect. Probably time to get a new one.
Agreed. Channel comes preset and 2 other ones are usually recommended. Go to one of the other channels not listed. Change channel instructions here;

Interference from other users on the same channel mostly happens at nearly the same time time period every day.
It beats the mystery...
Two and a half years for only $30.00 bucks is a deal-——just buy a new one.
.
Routers are disposable. They eventually burn out. But a newer, faster router to replace it.
Yeah, I will buy a new one but it’s always good to get FReeper advice, I always learn something new.
Check and see if you have the latest firmware update on the router.
Too small, I can’t read the fine print....
Check out the wireless SOHO router from Ubiquiti Networks. Superior product at market-disruptive pricing levels.
Can I download that to my phone? J/K, I don’t have a serious problem with wifi but free tweaks never hurt.
(1) These things sometimes just die of old age, usually due to heat issues. Is there good airflow around the router?
(2) If by rebooting, you mean unplugging, let sit for a few minutes, and then plugging back in, then good try. If not, do so.
(3) Sometimes these problems have nothing to do with the router itself. Maybe someone moved in nearby and you have a channel collision. Download a WiFi sniffer app (several free/cheap ones exist) on your computer or smart phone (if you have one), see if someone is on the same channel as yours, and if someone is, hardware connect to the router and move to another channel.
Just some ideas...
Oh cool, something I can use to analyze right on my laptop, thanks!
Your problem is the name Linksys. My home network has been fine for years after purging it of all Linksys products. Maybe they have improved but I’ll never find out. Someone put in a Linksys router at my Church. It works.... Usually.
