How to Avoid Cultural Appropriation at Coachella
Teen Vogue ^ | April 14, 2017 | Jessica Andrews

Since it launched in October of 1999, Coachella's become something of a cultural force. The music and arts festival draws almost 100,000 people per day, according to Goldenvoice, including today's top performers and street-style stars. But every year, the thorn in the festival's side is appropriative fashion. From the overtly racist to the blindly ignorant, some Coachella attendees see festival fashion as the opportunity — knowingly or unknowingly — to demean cultures for Instagram likes.

"I am so sick of these appropriators coming over here and abusing us by wearing our western clothing. Sick of it!"

And drinking our potable liquids, eating our sanitary foods, using our transportation systems, speaking our languages, spending our money and enjoying the benefits of our system of health care etc etc . . .

“That pretty much spells the end of Michael Bolton’s career.”

I was thinking John Davidson.

What hypocrites! They practice cultural appropriation by walking upright.

As a white man, I am insulted by non-whites wearing blue jeans and running shoes, boots and shoes that lace - invented by white men.

I've never seen African tribes wearing those.

Other things like kitchen utensils, bridges, roads, airplanes, automobiles, computers, iPads, wristwatches must be taken away from non-whites...

We must protect our cultural heritage too!

Weren’t there protests at some college, where they were serving Mexican food? But it wasn’t being prepared or served by real Mexican people?? This nonsense gets absurd after a while. These people become parodies of themselves and do not see the ironies involved.

>> In the past, I’ve worn a Pocahontas costume for Halloween. It’s a mistake I regret, and I’ll never do it again knowing how hurtful it is. With appropriation being such a huge conversation these days, it’s easier than ever to educate yourself about cultural symbols. If you still choose to regard one as a disposable trend, it’s because you simply don’t respect the people behind it.<<

Say what?

I can tell you this. If ANY black person decides to dress up as Martin Mull, it won’t bother be at all.

Doesn’t anyone even remember the forgettable move “White Chicks?” Or “White Men Can’t Jump?”

Well, these nitwit are appropriating the ideas of whites. Since all of their instruments were invented by whites, the recording equipment was invented by whites, the musical scales were invented by whites....

Coachella is just a few miles away from out home. When a band with lots of bass plays, we can hear the thump, thomp, thump from 6 miles away.

This morning, westbound traffic on Interstate 10 heading to the LA area was stop and go for about 50 miles from Indio to Redlands with speeds running from 15 to 35 miles per hour on a freeway with a 70 mph speed limit.

I tuned in to the festival on Utube which had access to the three main stages. Almost all of the music was pure crap. Forget rock. A huge amount of it is electronic noise, much of it generated by so-called DJs.

I will admit that Lady GaGa put on a great show but quite raunchy in parts. She worked her butt off for an hour and a half.

Fortunately for the concert attendees, the 25 to 45 mph winds which we have been having off and on over the past three weeks, calmed down on Friday morning, the first concert day. However, 125,000 attendees walking around the huge grounds can stir up a lot of dust. At the three stages, it looked like a can of sardines had more room to spare.

At the local Trader Joe’s this afternoon, we spoke with a clerk who had attended the concert. She looked to be around college age and said, “Never again.” She said most of the music was terrible as was the dust which caused her eyes to swell.

Lastly, on the first day, a thief stole around 100 cell phones. He was caught when some of the victims used a find-my-phone app to locate him.

The Chinese people running the Mongolian grill by us could be accused of cultural appropriation.
I have already been accused of racism for complaining about Mexicans in the Luby’s adding too many peppers and spices to Americana food, told it is my problem I don’t like the green beans or potatoes that hot. I should have accused them of cultural appropriation / adulteration instead.

Restrict African American musicians to the black keys on the piano.

I don’t know if you are aware of the weather during the two weeks of the Parabas Open. It has been quite interesting that for about the past 5 years, the daily temperature during the tournament has been running about 15 degrees above normal.

All of us full time residents have noticed it. This year we wondered if temps would rise, and sure enough they did. Then the day after the tournament ended, the temps dropped to normal for early March. We shall see what next year brings.
