Autistic boy ‘snack shamed’ for bringing banana bread to school, Calgary mom says

A Calgary mom says her autistic son was “snack shamed” for taking banana bread to school, forced to eat in the hallway while his Grade 1 classmates ate fresh fruits and vegetables.

The mom, whom Postmedia has agreed not to identify over concerns her six-year-old son could be punished, said she recently learned he had been removed from class for the offending snack.

“They told me they only allow fresh fruits and vegetables for snack time,” she said, noting there are limited foods he will actually eat.

“He was told to sit outside of the class to eat his snack. It’s not right. He’s being punished by being made to eat by himself.”

The mom said her son is on the higher functioning side of the autism spectrum and attends regular classes at a Calgary public school despite his special needs.

But by ostracizing her child from his classmates, she feels it’s hurting his development and contributing to his growing antipathy toward school that’s manifested in recent months.

The mom said last week she met with administrators at the school and was told healthy snacks were part of the school’s learning environment.

“I was told it was part of the health curriculum or health unit, and he had to eat healthy food,” said the mother.

“I said (my son) should be in class eating with the other kids. I understand healthy eating, but you’re not going to tell me what to feed my child.”

According to the Calgary Board of Education’s nutrition policy, only “healthy food and beverage” options are sold or provided in the district’s schools, however it doesn’t apply to snacks or lunches packed for students by their parents.

Whip the ‘high functioning kid’ until he eats his fruits and veggies.

Then whip the school administrators until they each eat a loaf of banana bread.

There are a few cases of real autism, then a bunch of kids that just need some significant discipline. And a lot of idiot school administrators.

All of the children in this school are being abused by a totalitarian diktat which has nothing to do with her son's disability. ALL of the children in this school should be freed from it, not just those who imagine that their perceived victimhood entitles them to special status.

The boy has deviated from proper Party Doctrine. Be aware that his future punishments will be more severe until he thinks more correctly.

Banana bread countds as a fruit in my house.

Years ago it was the kids how did the teasing and shaming, now it’s the teachers and administrators.

It’s only going to get worse under Baby Doc Trudeau. After almost eight years of seeing what Obozo did to America, you’d think Canadians would have been a little wiser in the voting booth.

If Canadian laws are crafted the way I suspect they are (that is,left wing) this kid's mother could sue for millions due to her *disabled* son was singled out...humiliated...had his human rights systematically and wantonly violated.

Autism *is* a legitimate disability...a serious, life long brain disorder.

Can anybody tell me why Banana bread is considered an unhealthy food? It’s often made with a whole wheat base with bananas and nuts added. Banana sweeten the bread, not sugars....so what gives?

This enrages me——and the fact that the child is autistic does not matter.

PARENTS CAN FEED THEIR KIDS ANYTHING THEY DAMNED WELL PLEASE.

Perfect! LOL! :)

Seriously, though, this was wrong. I don’t know what it is like to have autism, but I imagine that any negative self-image feelings were exacerbated by this incident.

It could even be that he doesn’t really understand why he was separated from the others.

It’s tantamount to a form of child abuse on the part of the administrators, particularly since they know he has a disability.

Perhaps

and contributing to his growing antipathy toward school that’s manifested in recent months.

Well, there's a shock. It would seem that the 'antipathy' is richly deserved.

“I send food with him that I know he will eat,” she said.
“I don’t want people telling me what to feed my child.”

School Administrators: ‘Your child?’ What do you mean ‘your child?’ When he’s here he’s our child and we decide what he eats and doesn’t eat.

Banana bread is perfectly healthy!

Banana bread is perfectly disgusting.

IMO.

But that doesn't matter.

The school administrators have forgotten that they are public servants, not public masters. If Mom wants to feed her poor kid banana bread, and the misguided kid actually likes it ... that's their business. Not mine. Not the school administrators'.

Timothy 4

1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and COMMANDING TO ABSTAIN FROM MEATS, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving. For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

It is about to come true.
