The rumour mill has been swirling in recent months that he's set to take over the renowned James Bond franchise. And now, it appears fans can expect Idris Elba, 44, in the starring 007 role after his Guerrilla director John Ridley, 51, let sip that he 'can't wait' to see him on the silver screen commanding the iconic role. Speaking to BBC Radio One at the premiere of their new Sky Atlantic series, the Oscar winning writer couldn't help but gush about the Luther star's talent.

I think Daniel Craig did the best Bond movies and the last one he did - well, I figured they could just close down the whole thing after that performance.

They’ve been pushing for a Black Bond since Brosnan’s days.
Colin Salmon was the go-to guy since he was in three of the movies and was being touted as the next one.
Then it didn’t happen.
Now Idris Elba is the guy they’re pushing for and have been for some time.
I’m pretty sure Barbara Broccoli has been unimpressed by the push for “diversity”.

A black James Bond would give the franchise a needed refreshing....
All I care is can he play the role better than Timothy Hutton or Pierce Bronson ?

They TRY to make wannabe Godfather-like movies, like that TRASH tv show Empire. Couldn’t stomach one episode.
Elba is a very good actor, but the Bond character is white. Keep the PC crap out of this. Next we’ll see a remake of Peanuts with a lead character named Carlitos Marron (Charlie Brown in Spanish).

Still haven’t quite figured out how that one worked.
Idris Elba is a fantastic actor and would do a great “bond-like” character.
I don’t want to see him play Bond and it would alter the character from the original novels...however if the writers didn’t take the opportunity to dismantle the franchise completely from the novels, I think he would do a great job.
That being said.... I really did not want to see the franchise altered that much.
Hand this is coming from a man who has almost zero interest in pop culture so the fact that I know he’s a great actor means he’s done some incredible stuff.

Joseph Fiennes, a white man, was hired to play Michael Jackson just last January. That is, until lots of black actors began having fits about the prospect of a white guy playing what was at one time a black man. Of course ‘daughter’ Paris Jackson put her two cents in as well. She didn’t like it. The idea was quickly and quietly dropped.
They should start the series all over again from Dr. No.
44 is too old for a first time Bond Film. He will be 50 by the time his second would be made. I would vote for some one more in their early 30’s
