An Illinois teacher was fired for reprimanding a student for not standing during the Pledge of Allegiance, according to a report.

Vince Ziebarth, a driver’s ed teacher at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island, Ill., was axed March 16 for making “inappropriate comments” to 15-year-old Shemar Cooper, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Our coaches could kick us or abuse us but they would not have been allowed to use profanity.

I remember if we screwed up in practice a coach would say “assume the position” then he would put a ripple sole on your butt. All the coaches back then wore Riddell ripple sole shoes. Not sure why but they had a lock on coaching shoes.

If I were the teacher, instead of bullying, I would have sent him to the principal’s office. Cuz at least in one regard he would be standing.

Why doesn't he have the same last name?...recently one of the Philly TV stations did a feature on a woman of the same persuasion who was leading a crusade against random gun violence in her community because her son had been killed the year before - with her was a younger son - the son who was killed had had a last name not the same as hers or the younger son, whose last name was different than his mother's - i.e. all three were different - with 75% of the children in these communities born outside of marriage, we're not talking broken families, we're talking non-families - small wonder many of the kids have trouble with discipline, personal responsibility, valuing education and work, and much of the rest that makes for stable and enduring relationships and citizenship.....

Teacher should have been informed.

In fact, I think there is a cult religion that refuses to take the pledge. Mabye Jehovah Witnesses or Seventh Day Adventists. Teacher should be aware of that possibility too.

The teacher should have been reprimanded. I don’t know what she said to the kid. But it seems like an apology from the teacher to the kid would have sufficed.

I had students who were Jehovah Witness who couldn’t pledge according to their faith. I picked them to send the lunch bag to the office while the pledge was being recited. If there were more than one, they’d just sit quietly at their desks during the pledge. I wouldn’t berate the kid. If he was the one making a big deal out of not saying the pledge, I’d just send him out of the room. The kids do have rights they don’t surrender when they come to school.

It’s sad that Mr. Ziebarth actually thought that he had freedom of speech in the state of IL.

Not standing up or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is long time SCOTUS decision. It is a religious issue as well as freedom of speech issue. Originally I think the case involved a quaker or mormon student but my memory is hazy and I could very well be wrong. But SCOTUS ruled that students can not be forces to stand or recite the pledge. This is basic law and the teacher is wrong.

Students wearing black arm bands (during the Vietnam War) as a form of protest was also upheld by SCOTUS. I remember hearing a story a few years back of students catching hell for doing just that. That is why I thought the decision regarding students wearing American Flag shirts was a miscarriage of justice.

I really should count my blessings. I grew up with a wonderful mother and father. They have both gone to be with the Lord over the last few years.

I learned so much from both my parents. I couldn’t imagine it any other way. It’s a shame others don’t have more of a commitment to family.

When I taught, I ignored the kids who would not stand for the Pledge, it was not worth the battle and it was their right not to stand for the Pledge.

Their fellow students could apply more pressure on them than any teacher.

The Pledge, in a government school, constitutes an establishment of religion.

If mandatory, it constitutes an infringement of the First Amendment.

I love threads about the Pledge because they reveal who knows the true origin and intent of the Pledge (a socialist contrivance originally accompanied by what later came to be known as the “Nazi salute”), and who values the Constitution over symbolic gestures.

One PE Teacher I had had his ‘punishment shoe’ mounted to a board for extra spanking speed/power, He called it his ‘Vegetable Machine’! Because, in his best Gunny Hartman voice.....”WHEN YOU MEN SRCREW UP YOU ARE VEGTABLES! BRAIN DEAD!! GET OVER HERE!!! SHORTS DOWN, JOCK ALSO!! BEND OVER.....POW!!!! It was LONG time ago. (I’m sure others have similar memories!) Damn did it sting!!

I suppose this is the only reason a teacher will get fired these days...

Thee goes this kid’s chance of being a good “get-a-way” driver after school.

Gee, it’s a hard world out there. No father, no car, no license, no common sense. That’s one of DeBlasio’s kids for sure.

that’s the liberal goal—

The steady criminalization of everything that is conservative or traditional

and of course on the flipside—permisiveness of everything that is leftist

When I went to elementary school in daBronx their were a few classmates who were excused from reciting The Pledge because of their beleifs, all it took was a note from their parents. We were admonished by our teachers and the school principal, as well as our parents in no uncertain terms NOT to harass or make fun of those of those kids.

It is infuriating, as the nation’s veins are sliced open and its blood flows into the sewers.
