Technology giant Microsoft is blocking Windows 7 and 8.1 updates on Intel's seventh generation Core i3, i5 and i7 AMD's seventh generation processor (Bristol Ridge) and Qualcomm's 8996 processors.
While trying to scan and download updates through Windows Update, error messages appear saying, "Windows could not search for new updates" and "code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error."
As explained in Microsoft Knowledge based article the errors occur as the new processor generations require the latest Windows version. For those on Windows 7 and 8.1, Microsoft recommends updating the devices to Windows 10.
In response to the matter a Microsoft spokesperson told the Forbes, "As new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support. This enables us to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon while maintaining maximum reliability and compatibility with previous generations of platform and silicon".
From July onward the Intel Skylake processors will not support Windows 7 and 8, which means users will need to update to the latest operating system in order to receive further updates.
However, Microsoft did not reveal how much it would charge users of Windows 7 and 8.1 devices after the free Windows update period gets over. But users can use Windows 7 and 8.1 product keys for Windows 10 installation.

I had a Windows 7 Pro that worked great from 2009 until 2017. Microsoft upgraded my machine to Windows 10 without my authorization. I was able to get back, but my Windows 7 never worked right after that.
This is why I left Microsoft and jumped onto an Apple platform.
I refuse to update. I have turned updates off.

You can set it up so there’s never any automatic updates.
True, but it’s not always compatible with some older programs.
Do the processors still operate on the older drivers or is it just a “scary” message?
The point is if you produce a product and sell it to the public, you should be forced to stand behind it.
If GM tried this they’d be facing lawsuits out the wazoo.
Their position that you are buying a “license” and not product is warped legal fiction at its most disgusting.

The first thing I do for all my computers with Win 10 is turn off that b!tch Cortana. As of a few releases ago, you have to use a registry hack.
I do a LOT of side by side work and the tiling doesn’t allow that — or at leas not very well.
What is a Sarmistha Acharya ? I have an 8 year old Dell Laptop that has gone through Vista, W7, W8 and now W10. Only issue is with some game graphics, everything else works fine. Luddites relax.
It isn’t necessarily compatible with older hardware and software. It can essentially brick your machine. If you use your machine for certain types of legacy software, it may not work on 10.

Yep. Been there and had that happen as well....on our business machine.
Switched over to Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 and running Libre Office instead.
Haven’t looked back since. For the personal computer, we run an Apple machine with the latest OS. Also run Libre Office on it. It’s a little different, but works fine once we realized the differences. We no longer have any MSFT-based machines....or MSFT stock. We said “goodbye” after the unauthorized update.
So is this an Intel problem, or a Microsoft problem?
(As long as it still runs DOS 3.0, I'm good with it)
FWIW:
I now set up my well heeled clients on a Mac and install Parallels (12 is the latest version) and either Windows 7 or 8.1.
I, of course, turn off updates after I bring IE up to version 11.
Windows is only open when you want it open and I/We never have had any issues with MS screwing up the Windows partition.
If you are interested you need at least 8GB RAM.
PS - look at the Mac Mini - it’s a powerhouse and very reasonably priced for a Mac.
Linux on 64 bit hardware....
At some point Windows 10 is going to go full on “software as a service”, meaning for every bit of the OS and anything you install, you are going to pay a monthly fee. Stop paying, it stops working. Microsoft wants to be like the electric company. Windows 10 is the camel’s nose in the tent for that.
Even windows 7 has to phone home to verify you have a valid license or it stops working.
