Julia, a Girl Muppet With Autism, Makes the Move to TV’s ‘Sesame Street’
The Spokesman-Review ^ | MONDAY, MARCH 20, 2017

Folks on Sesame Street have a way of making everyone feel accepted.

That certainly goes for Julia, a Muppet youngster with blazing red hair, bright green eyes – and autism. Rather than being treated like an outsider, which too often is the plight of kids on the spectrum, Julia is one of the gang.

Look: On this friendliest of streets (actually Studio J at New York’s Kaufman Astoria Studios, where “Sesame Street” lives) Julia is about to play a game with Oscar, Abby and Grover. In this scene being taped for airing next season, these Muppet chums have been challenged to spot objects shaped like squares or circles or triangles.

"...it is really hard to explain autism to youngsters and the issues the youngsters have vary greatly child to child."

Like the saying goes: If you've seen one child with Autism, well, you've seen one child with Autism - the spectrum is so wide.

If I had a dollar for everyone that says: "My sister-in-law's friend has a cousin with Autism...."
Sooo, you understand what it's like to raise a child with Autism - thank you for your understanding (said silently).

I think it's just a matter of people extending a little grace towards something they don't really understand - you don't have to understand, just allow us a little grace, please.

For years, I waited..

They are more often BOYS but of course this is a girl.

“Cultural misappropriation.”

Seriously, The boys with autism could use more help as everyone is less kind to boys I think.

I have my reasons to be especially compassionate toward those with autism. It is real and they deserve to be treated well like people, and protected appropriately especially in a mandated school setting where they end up mistreated too often.

How old are you? And was your autism self-diagnosed or diagnosed by a doctor?

As of 10-15 years ago, autism began to be overdiagnosed.

It became an excuse for bratty behavior from children raised by permissive parents. When these aforementioned brats began having children, the behavior mutated into the SJWs we ridicule today.

I say this as a parent whose child was “medically” diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. He exhibited these supposed markers when I realized he was not spending enough time with peers and was therefore socially retarded. He also played (and still plays) too many video games.

He is now 26 and fairly well adjusted, enough to hold down an extremely well paying mechanical engineering job.

Yes, I am thinking of Downs Syndrome features.
To be truthful, I didn’t know if it was still correct to describe the condition as ‘Downs Syndrome’ or not.

I’m 31. Diagnosed by a psychiatrist at age 23.

And believe me, I resisted believing the diagnosis for as long as I possibly could. It made my life painfully more complicated to accept it.

Fortunately it’s not an overly severe case. With a little medication and a lot of training, I am living in the world much better than before. It’s still a daily struggle with severe social anxiety though.

With a little medication ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now that’s strange. The doctor told my son there was no medical treatment that could alleviate the problem.
