Now that the marketplace has provided carry on meals for purchase in the concourses, I’d rather do that than what the airlines would give away for free in coach.

This would be a big improvement in service. I used to travel for work a lot back in the 90’s and while it wasn’t as good as earlier even then, you could get a meal on a cross country flight over 3 or 4 hours. Since that time, flying as a passenger has become just a PITA experience and not enjoyable at all. 911 obviously didn’t help, but the service was fast going down hill even before that.

With Michelle Obama’s lunch program dying, meal contractors are turning to new outlets.

I didn’t know they stopped. Guess it’s been a long time since I flew a long flight.

I’m old enough to remember when people dressed up to travel by airplane, and there were nice meals.

Today, it’s flip flops and tiny bags of pretzels.

It shouldn't be necessary, on a conservative site, to point out that: there is no free lunch.

Started bringing on a sandwich years ago - much better than what they used to serve (except when travelling Business class overseas, then everything is yummy).

Some airports are better than others for stocking up for a mealtime flight. Burger king would sell you burgers for your lunch before a 10am departure, but McDonalds will only sell breakfast items at that hour.

For higher quality, a couple of terminals at DFW have a good range of choices, and a couple don’t. So if you have time, it can be worthwhile to hike or take the train to another terminal. Atlanta also has good choices at several of its terminals, although they seem to be targeting the unlimited budget customers.
