Rock legends The Who on Monday announced a residency in Las Vegas, putting off retirement as they wind down what they called a final tour.

Caesars Palace, one of the landmarks of Sin City, said that The Who will begin playing at the hotel on July 29.

The residency will initially be only six shows, although a statement described it as a “first run.”

A little story: in 1976 my band “Rampage” was playing at the Troubadour on Santa Monica and Townsend & Entwhistle as we started our set.
They stayed the whole set then when we took a break they came up & slapped me on the shoulder and said “Good show, eh wot?”

Saw them in Seattle, 1973 - tightest big time rock band ever and I witnessed nearly all of them live except the Beatles back in those days.

Somebody must have informed Pete that casinos insist the show set is short in order to get the gamblers back on the floor.

I don’t think these two guys are it. They lean slightly right of center as they’ve gotten older.

In Pete’s autobio, he says he still is a “Socialist”, but it’s more as in he’s for the little guy, as opposed to being a dogmatic socialist.

Good to know there are at least a few exceptions to the rule.
The Who has been famous for so long, they don’t need to fear anybody, not even the British Tax Collector.

Doesn’t Roger Daltrey still live in Los Angeles?

“At some point these performances take on almost a religious aura.”

That’s the problem.

People now know pop music references as their deepest philosophies and spiritual experiences.

Pop superseded the Bible as the touchstone for western culture and moral understanding.

This is very apparent in the UK, even more than here.

True. That’s when anyone who was a closet moderate or even right wing comes out of the closet.

When they’re in their 70s or about to die :)

Was Rampage an LA band? How long did the band last? Where else did you play?

Saw the Who back in 1976 (with Keith Moon) and 1980 (with Kenney Jones). Obviously, was not the same.

Had an opportunity to see the Townsend / Daltrey show in 2008 and 2012 (without Entwistle and Moon, they aren’t the Who). Absolutely no interest. It would ruin my memories of the greatest rock band in history.

After all, seeing a 70 year old croak out “My Generation” just doesn’t work for me.

Townsend, however, child porn connoisseur, probably would.

Come on, man. He was doing "research."

It was televised across the country and we packed bars everywhere to watch it. Then mere months later it was ..well, maybe we’ll tour again...and here they are three decades later!

The multiple "farewell" tours were a courtesy to John Entwistle, who managed his money poorly and was always broke.

At least, that was Townshend's excuse. And Entwistle has been dead for 15 years so who knows what the explanation is today.

Maybe he just likes playing the songs he wrote. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose.
