Microsoft has taken the next step in pushing advertising on customers of its Windows 10 operating system, with users reporting an advertisement for Microsoft OneDrive now appearing in their File Explorer.
Windows 10 has been repeatedly reprimanded by technology journalists over the past year for the increasing amounts of advertising that are baked into the system. Advertisements in various forms have appeared in the Start menu, the lock screen, the taskbar, in the Windows Store, and various other areas. This seems to be the first time that users are noticing them in the File Explorer, the application that allows users to look through their documents and applications on their computer.
...
Not only are these advertisements invasive, but they are also incredibly difficult to turn off

Microsoft has previously found itself being taken to court for its anti-competitive behavior with Internet Explorer, and Wilson believes that the company has learned nothing from its past lawsuits.

I wanted one. I didn’t have $99.00.
OK, so it's obviously Tim Cook's fault. Got it.
My bad. But there are very capable substitutes for the file browser, too.
I saw Explorer 10 in the article, and assumed it was a salvage operation on the old Explorer browser that’s being phased out for Edge.
If you use the Smart Keyboard it’s actually quite good. But if you’ve the 9-inch iPad Pro don’t get the keyboard for that one. Spring for the full-size version instead. MUCH easier to type on. But yeah, using the onscreen keyboard with your thumbs while holding landscape is a skill I’ve yet to master.
#6 I use XYplorer in Windows 7 desktop pc for several years and have installed in 10 on my laptop. I have not yet made it the default manager.

I bookmarked your link and downloaded the trial.
I will check it out.
FREE - Winaero to tweak many things Microsoft left off Windows 10. http://winaero.com
As expected.
The ability to understand computers and operating systems is inversely proportional to ones desire to go to Win 10 and like it.
Windows Explorer on steroids without the ads.
Thank you!
I've been muttering & cussing at WIn 8.1 File Explorer ever since my new laptop came loaded with it vs my old Win 7 machine.
I've just installed the Trial version, by so far it looks great.
Thanks for the recommendation!
and I admit owning an IBM PC jr.
Actually, I'm sort of a Luddite:
I've got a 2 year old desktop
Pretty bare-bones. I'll probably build a new one at some point this year. I want more RAM (believe it or not).
But the last tablet I had was a long, long time ago -- found I never really used it all that much. Can't see dropping the money for a tablet when I can get so much more in a proper computer for the same money.
I still have One Drive on my Windows 10 PC and I've yet to see a single advertisement in Windows File Explorer, or any other part of Windows 10. I've no idea what people are talking about when they say they see ads in Windows 10...... I don't see any and to the best of my knowledge I've not done anything special on my pc to disable them.
After the next to last update I would see them when I accessed an attached USB drive.
Was surprised MS let me uninstall One Drive.
Same here. I've seen Task Bar popups as "Tips, Tricks, and Suggestions" that are really advertisements, but those are easily blocked: How To Stop Popups. Obnoxious feature to be on by default. It isn't the first Microsoft marketing has made the company look stupid.
The Windows operating system has been malware, virus, trojan, worm, and SPAM rolled into one. It’s virtually unusable for real work unless you rip everything Microsoft out of it. The only thing Microsoft has done half well is improving MS Office on the Macintosh. It still sucks on Windows because everything on Windows sucks.
There were rumors (nyuck, nyuck) that one of our local BBSs in Sacramento in the 1980s was run on a bunch of networked Timex Sinclair 1000s. I wish I could remember the name of that BBS. We had some fun ones in the Sacramento area.
#NEVERTEN
I finished off Windows last year, just have one forlorn XP machine in case I have to boot up Office. I’m on Fedora Linux. It ain’t perfect, but it gets better every six months.
Figure I save $500 a year in various Microsoft taxes. Times say 20 years and that’s $10k. Then add in no virus crashes. I’m not into bells and whistles, just work, so the water is fine.
There is a photo of the ad here (2nd photo down): https://techraptor.net/content/windows-10-now-shows-onedrive-ads-in-the-file-explorer
All of us “win 7 forever” die-hards are happy we don’t have to put up with this. MSFT becomes more and more intrusive.
I get all sorts of advertisements.
Always for porn websites.
I guess they know their audience.
