Get out now while you still have the chance!

A blizzard warning has been issued for New York City and much of the tri-state area beginning at midnight Tuesday as Winter Storm Stella threatens to dump as much as 18 inches of snow.

Whiteout conditions are expected to make travel extremely dangerous and power outages are likely amid crippling wind gusts of 20 to 40 mph, according to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines.

New Yorkers stockpile supplies as massive snowstorm looms.

“Travel will be poor at best, if not impossible,” Kines told The Post on Monday. “If you have the option tomorrow of staying put, I would definitely recommend that. And if you try to fly by air tomorrow, forget it — not happening.”

The blizzard warning — which will be in effect for 24 hours — will cover New York City and Long Island as well as Fairfield, Westchester, Rockland, Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Union, Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Snow will begin around 3 a.m. and continue throughout Tuesday before tapering off in the evening, Kines said.

The city is expected to get at least a foot of snow and 16 to 18 inches could get dumped on western and northwestern areas of the city. Eastern Long Island could be spared with just 6 to 8 inches.

Is the temperature in the clouds the same as closer to the ground?

Not usually. Usually the temperature drops with height but there are times the warmer air overrides the colder air below and that's the case.

Either way, past experience says that at 34 it's more likely to be snow or sleet than rain.

At 34, it should be rain, no?

I'd say probably not.

And that close to freezing, it's going to be very heavy and wet, which is BRUTAL shoveling and gets stuck in the snow blower.

It's a lose/lose situation either way.

Runaway Global Warming has doomed us to a Country that will NEVER see Snow Again.

And the Statue of Liberty is half submerged from the ice cap melt...

I’ve seen some very large accumulations with temps above freezing. Surface temps and temps aloft can vary wildly. That’s how it can rain with surface temps in the teens, the most dangerous type of ice storm, freezes on contact.

Wet snow and sleet on unfrozen ground with temps above freezing can cause flooding with rapid melt, and it freezes back to a skating rink at night with all the standing water.

Sounds as if you’re in for a fun several days. This is what we get in the south, when we get it at all. Snow and sleet on top of ice with a daily freeze thaw cycle that puts black ice on roads and sidewalks all over again. Rock salt, fertilizer or kitty litter are in order for your sidewalk and drive.

It’s already crapping out where I live in Riverhead NY, barely an inch on the ground and they say it’s changing to rain 10am. Damn, that means I gotta go to work lol. Freakin weathermen, they always got to sensationalize these things - a “major blizzard of the year with 2 feet of snow” turns into a drizzle.

Wow, now it is *really* crapping out here in Riverhead NY, what a joke. I just went outside and it’s a light drizzle, warm, and snow barely covering the ground and they just lowered the prediction from rain from 10am to 9am. This is laughable, this is turning into rain with a slight coating of sleet yet look how this was promoted: “20 inches of snow”

“..this is turning into rain with a slight coating of sleet ...”

That’s what it gets like in Seattle. And then it freezes. I’d rather have the 20-inches of snow!

Ten inches at present in the Susquehanna Valley of central Pennsylvania, and coming down at ~2"/hr .. not s'posed to let up much til late this afternoon.

It's not powder, rather a middling 'weight' at present, and with 150' of 25° driveway, that's good news for the blower and my cardiovascular remnants.

Forecast is calling for 15-25" .. so this morning's big decision is: wait for it to quit before getting the blower out, or make two 12" runs at it ?

it's always somethin' . . .

Toss a slice of orange or some other citrus into the mix!
[BTW, any beer that requires an infusion of citrus should be summarily avoided!]
