"This has been going on throughout Asia for years." My rich neighbor, a 35 year immigrant from New Zealand, went to china, met and married a Chinese woman, she's my neighbor.(A wonderful lady).
Anyway, when I asked him why 'ping' (her name) wore so many clothes and a bonnet almost covering her face when out working in the flower beds in summer. He told me that it was common among Chinese because they feared getting darker and block the sun...they want to be lighter.
