While stunning, the collapse does not come as a complete surprise. Formed by erosion, the Window was eventually destined to be destroyed by erosion:

The storms in that part of the Med have always been intense. Just ask St Paul.
If the rock has also collapsed, it may be that the fallen rock mass pulled the bridge down.
