Way Too Many People Make the Same Dangerous Mistake With Fancy Cameras

Any professional photographer can instantly tell what the person in this picture is doing wrong. Can you?

Hint: look at the camera strap.

The quickest way to tell an amateur with a fancy DSLR from a pro before they even begin shooting is to watch where they hang their strap.

When I was just a baby photographer in college, I hung my strap from my neck and an older, wiser student named Ray Whitehouse nearly jumped out of his skin setting me straight. Pros hang their straps from their shoulders for some very good reasons.

Amateurs put it over their necks, like the woman in the photo. Now every time I see shooters with their gear dragging on their necks like medieval torture devices — which is pretty much anytime I see anyone with an expensive camera — I wince.

The first and most important reason for this is back pain. Cameras are heavy — especially when they have top-tier lenses attached. And they're a lot to haul around even if you're carrying them properly. If you carry them wrong, however, they can do real damage.

Really?

Do you give a dentist crap when they buy a tool to do their jobs better?

I’ll tell you what: You lug three cameras around your neck for eight hours, and then we can talk.

You better tell her that Ike’s is not a theme park... she will find out one day.

Was out with my Leica M3 and Tmax 100 yesterday. Tacoma tideflats industrial area. Will complete the roll, develop in my tub, scan and post in the next month or so.

Actually they have a mini theme park that you can sign your child into while you go shop.

We did that and then halfway through the place I saw a shortcut to go back and got her out because I missed her. She enjoyed the whole trip very much.

I don’t know why that happened.

The HTML coding which creates the page is designed to resize the photo automatically so it doesn't overwhelm the text that goes with it. When you hotlinked the image, that resizing feature didn't come with it.

Took this picture from the bus on Saturday.

Were you standing on the roof of a triple decker?

If I were in Europe I’d carry the camera around my neck too. Having it slung over the shoulder makes it easy to be snatched and grabbed by gypsies........

That was the old Europe. Today, a different ethnic group is what you need to worry about, and a neck strap would only slow them down by the length of time it would take to cut your head off.

Yes. She is wearing too much makeup around her eyes. It makes her eyelashes look clumpy.

Cameras are heavy

No, they aren't. The writer must not have much experience with cameras. My current SLR weighs less than my flash units used to. And while my old, heavy, metal camera would have been of some use for defense, my upscale current one would be of no use at all.

That theft is essentially what happened to Private Rafterman and Private Joker in Full Metal Jacket the terrific 1987 film.

On the other hand this post is a good example of a bad post, and using all of that "server" space.

What server space?

Stupid article from an arrogant snot. Around the neck is just fine. I sling mine around my neck and one shoulder. It makes it easy to tuck under my arm for protections and, if someone tries to grab it or it gets stuck on something, I don’t get choked.

I also use a sling bag, goes around one shoulder and neck, to carry my camera and extra lenses and filters.

The actual image file is a little over 1 mb, not a huge file by today’s standards.

The file isn’t stored on an FR server, it is stored on the Business Insider server, and hotlinked here.

That’s only an opinion. I know plenty of pros who put the strap over the head.

Good observation. Double decker, we had the front row seats with the nice view and I traveled back to take the shots. Here is the other:

We passed them on the bridge and then I thought they might catch-up at the light and they did.

I can see the photo just fine. Just press Ctrl and spin the mouse wheel.
Of course, when the photo is viewable the words are so small they look like straight lines.
