Gloria Steinem: Women Have ‘Chick Flicks.’ What About Men?
NY Times ^ | March 2, 2017 | Gloria Steinman

Posted on 03/02/2017 6:04:39 AM PST by C19fan

I was on a flight from New York to Seattle recently when a long delay on the tarmac prompted the airline to offer us a free movie. As the flight attendant read the choices aloud, a young man across the aisle said, “I don’t watch chick flicks!”

I knew what he meant, and so did the woman sitting next to me. A “chick flick” is one that has more dialogue than car chases, more relationships than special effects, and whose suspense comes more from how people live than from how they get killed.

I wasn’t challenging his preference, but I did question the logic of his term. After all, much of what we read as great literature in school may well have been called “chick lit,” especially if it had been written by women.

Movie or TV series?

Or both?

Indeed they were. Among other things, I’m a writer. When I was in my thirties I studied creative writing formally for two years. I did it at night after working all day as a tax lawyer. I encountered a lot of different kinds of people, but none were from my conservative “normal” adult life. I was accumstomed to a world of educated high-achievers with a certain level of affluence. Other than a few spoiled young feminist types straight out of college sponging off their parents, none had any money. Most of the other writers were people with serious problems, some had mental issues. Many of them seemed like life was simply too hard for them, as if they were broken in some way. Homosexuality seems to fit that description, as least to me, and a number of people I met through writing were gay. I think many broken people use writing as an outlet for their inner pain. My regular life was rational and logical, but many of the writers seemed incapable of rational thought. I would marvel night after night at just how screwed up some of their minds were. I think Hollywood is full of the same kinds of misfits I’m describing.

Anyway, I’m rambling and don’t know if any of that makes sense.

I’m female. My idea of a chick flick is not Hollyweird’s.

Meathead didn’t write the funny lines. The great screenwriter William Goldman did.

Oh, I know. Meathead was still involved, though. I was 18 when that movie came out, and I've loved it ever since I first saw it in the theater. What's funny is, I hated the original book when I was forced to read it in my 10th-grade English class.

Actually, I have on DVD the documentaries NESN did on Boston’s Cup winning seasons of 1969-70 and 1971-72. Lovely highlights of games from those seasons in full colour with fights and plenty of ice hockey.

For folks who love the movie, a fun book on its making...

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride

The first Rambo movie.

But then...a good book would suit me.

That’s so cool! Another reason I love dead tree editions: It’s hard to autograph an ebook. :-)

It must be horrible going through life seeing yourself as a second class citizen and constantly trying to convince everyone (and yourself) that you aren’t.

That is a sad, sad person.

Gloria Steinem was a moron in the 70’s and I see she still hasn’t been vaccinated. :-)

Most very successful writers, as opposed to dabblers, are very devoted to the craft. So in that sense, whether straight or gay, alcoholic or teetotalers, they are very dedicated workers. I just have always wondered why good female writers are often spinsters and/or lesbians. Emily Bronte has been posited as a lesbian but I find nothing in her life that suggests that. And, one of my favorite writers, Shirley Jackson, was a mother and a homebody.

“Chick flicks are movies where women talk about their feelings, and other boring stuff.”

That is what most guys would describe a ‘chick flick’ as, or where the focus is on the woman finding love and romance, not a movie that has more dialogue than car chases.

Would she say ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ or ‘12 Angry Men’ was a ‘chick flick’? There’s a whole lot of talking but no shooting, killing or car chases.

I am a woman, and I can’t stand chick flicks! LOL!

And my favorite movie is Ben Hur. Especially the Chariot Race! LOL!

My Favorite Book is the Bible, followed by Moby Dick.

Tombstone. Except the parts where Josephine (Dana Delaney) wants to make it all about her.

Fabian: My dear, you've set your gaze upon the quintessential frontier type. Note the lean silhouette... eyes closed by the sun, though sharp as a hawk. He's got the look of both predator and prey.

Josephine: I want one.

Women. You can't live with them, you can't shoot them...
