RIP, Movement Conservatism
American Thinker ^ | February 27, 2017 | J.R. Dunn

Among his other accomplishments, Donald Trump, without ever intending to, has fractured conservatism – something that was long overdue.

The American conservative movement has come quite a distance since the middle of the last century, from a small coterie viewed with contempt by the larger culture to the front ranks of a juggernaut that set back the plans of this country’s left-wing collectivists to a degree that its founders would not have considered possible. (Recall William F. Buckley’s statement that the role of conservatism was to “stand athwart history, yelling “stop.” Incredible as it may seem, “history” did stop.) Today, in large part due to its own success, it is on its way back to coterie status.

How has this come about? Here’s a simple outline of the conservative movement as it has consisted up until now: a group of conservative intellectuals, associated either with think tanks or journals, who work out philosophical and political stances, translate them into policy proposals, followed by attempts to put them into effect by the GOP, with the support of the mass of conservatives across the country.

This model has served the conservative cause well for half a century. It is now dead. It began to die long before Trump donned the robes of GOP crusader, when the core conservatives – what in the past I’ve called the Northeast Corridor conservatives – in 2008 turned against vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin and in short order against the Tea Party movement that came into being as a response to the Obama regime.

Not true. Conservatism was fractured long before Trump. In 2012 I used to argue at websites with Romney supporters because I didn’t find Mitt any good. Those Romney supporters thought they were “conservative.”

What had the “Conservative Movement” accomplished all of those years, other than being nothing more than a “debating society”?

The establishment whores in DC have completely bastardized the term “Conservatism” into meaning who has the biggest check from K-Street.

I think conservatism attached to classical elitist conservative establishment has largely been a concerted campaign of deception about real motives. Lies of exigency (to get elected) in my opinion.

This deception was outed by Trump and the bleats, moans, deceit, scheming, cheating and sabotage by the establishment conservatives was clearly, clearly apparent during this campaign. The acolytes of this entrenched cabal are now known, and they will never recover from it in my opinion. Truth and straight talk combined with action will see to that.

If we’d just support amnesty, bug government spending, and ObamaCare, conservatism would be alive and well! \s

I don't see how anyone can say that conservatism has been a "success" over the past 30 or 40 years. Government has continued to increase and expand, we have significant new entitlements. We have gay marriage. We have trangender rights. Abortion is alive and well. The Left has continued to march forward and conservatism, generally, has been losing.

“Killed the Soviet union.”

That was the last time they did the right thing. Since then they’ve ignored Putin re-arming, China’s rise, and barely cared about Iran or the Norks.

80% of Republicans have been SCREAMING at the party ever since Bush Sr. broke his tax pledge, simply because the party wouldn’t allow someone we like and want to run (and don’t forget, these ‘movement’ people hated Reagan too, initially).

And when someone rises up that represents the 80%, they tell us they’re going to vote for Hillary instead. And as someone earlier pointed out, these ‘movement conservatives’ wouldn’t even fight to keep the ladies’ room safe.

“Trump is a Paleo Conservative, of the Pat Buchanan type”

In some ways, but not in others, like it comes to Israel, for example.

It was fractured before Mittens.

We had people on this forum who insisted that if you would not participate in arming the Muslim theocrats by voting for McCain then you really wanted Obama. Much of the openly and unabashedly Islamist faction here would go on to champion Islamist icon Rick Perry, who signed Sharia Court provisions into Texas law

As things have played out, those two turncoats have become revealed to everyone as being exactly what they were then , and nobody promoting either one is cooling anybody anymore.
