Yeah, the AR15 is Now Becoming C&R Eligible
Forgotten Weapons ^ | 2/7/17 | Ian McCollum

Given the status of the AR15 as the preeminent military rifle still today, it comes as a surprise to many people to learn just how old the gun really is. Civilian production of the SP-1 model by Colt actually began in 1964, which means that early SP-1 rifles started becoming Curio & Relic qualified back in 2014. Right now in 2017, more than 10,000 C&R AR15s exist – and this is one of them.

For those who may not know, a curio & relic is a designation of any firearm that is over 50 years old, and allows one with a C&R license to purchase these items across state lines without having to go through an FFL.

The point being that the "assault weapons" being banned are now becoming so old that they are designated as 'relics.'

Must be why I don’t have any trouble crossing state lines.

Curious, so any one with a serial number under 10,000 is C&R?

So how does this affect the various state laws that have been put into place?

Anything below SP010750, according to the YouTube video.

Depends on the law, and depends on the state. If a state has a ban on so-called "assault weapons," but exempts C&R firearms, then the C&R eligible ARs would be legal. I don't know of any state that has exempted C&R weapons from any assault weapon bans, so you'd have to research your own state's laws to know for sure.

How is it possible that my old AR weighs almost TWICE what my friends’ new AR weighs?

I held his and it almost floated away like a butterfly, whereas mine, tied to a rope, could be used to anchor small vessels.

Usually, most of the weight difference between particular ARs comes down to barrel profile.

It's also worth noting that ATF will approve as C&R certain firearms that are less than 50 years old if they have collector interest, are not likely to be used in a crime or were produced in limited numbers. A good example is the Yugo SKS. There are several other interesting firearms on their C&R list that are not 50 years old. A C&R license is well worth it.

I have a winner!
Have a garden verity AR-15 (less than 50 rounds fired)with original Colt scope, magazines and bayonet mounted on my office wall.
Haven't thought about how old it's (and I) are getting.
I also have a Sterling AR-18 with Colt scope and factory magazines. I've never found a serial number reference for the 18 but it must be over the mark also.
Any one have a sn list they stumbled across?
Thank you for information.

Nobody is going to want that ancient piece of junk when they can buy a brand new one. Tell you what, you throw in the accessories and I'll take it off your hands for $500 cash money right now.

P.S., isn't a Sterling AR-18 select fire? Perhaps you have an AR-180?

In any case, according to Wikipedia Sterling built AR-18/AR-180s from 1979 to 1985. You have more than a decade to wait, at the very least.
