Dying for Windows 10 Creators Update? But wait, there's more! (Windows10 2017 roadmap)

Microsoft roadmap lays out second big update for 2017

Microsoft has confirmed it is planning a second major update for Windows 10, which is to be piloted this year, and is seriously considering releasing it before 2018.

This is according to word out of Microsoft's Ignite partner conference in Australia, where the Redmond software giant revealed its map for upcoming operating system updates in a session.

Software engineer Rafael Rivera posted online screenshots of the operating system's roadmap, which shows that following the Creators Update release – due spring 2017 – a second, unnamed major Windows 10 update is slated to arrive later in the year to beta testers.

The last major update to Windows 10, the Anniversary Update, was kicked out to the general public in August of last year.

Microsoft has long promised that Creators Update would be the big overhaul for Windows in 2017, selling the release to developers on the strength of its plans to overhaul the Cortana assistant, add more support for virtual reality hardware, and improve mobile integration. Despite some speculation, however, it will not bring about the end of the Blue Screen of Death.

The Creators update is due out in a few months, though Microsoft has not given an official date for its release. The as-yet unnamed second update is expected to be released as a beta to Windows Insiders when the Creators Update goes live to the public, and will officially launch four to eight months later – a point in time before the end of the year, Microsoft hopes.

If the official launch of the second major update happens in, say, November 2017, the Creators Update is set to arrive next month at the earliest or July at the latest.

As Redmond-centric blog OnMsft notes, Microsoft has hinted in the past it could be looking to put out a second big update for Windows after the Creators Update was released, and this week's presentation confirms that goal.

The Register understands the timing of second update is yet to be finalized, with sources close to Redmond suggesting the Ignite revelation was directional guidance for IT managers rather than a hard and fast commitment to a release date. But those managers have, at least, now been warned they may be asked to consider a pre-Christmas upgrade.

I think Microsoft should announce that all updates to Windows 10 happen on a once-a-week schedule, except for really critical components like the Edge web browser and the certain code related to networking.

I’m curious. Is 10 available in any way for free?

Windows 10 is a virus that shows up unannounced and unwanted. I could never find a way to delete it so I just minimized it and use chrome. It was awful.

Windows 10 adoption rate is stagnating

It seems that Microsoft is having a hard time retrieving more new users on Windows 10. The operating system install base has been stuck on 400 million for four months now. Ever since Microsoft ended its free upgrade campaign, that install base remained roughly the same. The company earlier this week announced that it has 400 million active Windows 10 users reports myce.com:

The slow growth is related to the the end of the free Windows 10 upgrade period and the disappointing sales of Windows smartphones. It’s therefore very unlikely that Microsoft will achieve its goal of 1 billion Windows 10 users by 2018.

“We’re very happy with the progress but due to the shifted focus of our smartphone hardware business it will take us longer to achieve the goal of 1 billion active devices by 2018”, according to a Microsoft spokesman.

Windows 10’s market share has grown by 2% to 3% after the free upgrade period ended, about a fifth of the 10% monthly growth when users could still upgrade for free.

Not any more. That stopped last July.

I would be suspicious of any alleged "free" copies these days, as they are probably either hacked/infected, or won't "Activate" after installation.

Win10 adoption is in trouble, and they know it. They'll be lucky to make a billion installs by 2020 at this rate.

But in Jan 2020 Win7 stops getting security updates. That will force a lot of business and professional users to switch to Win10 if they haven't already.

Hopefully, by then Win10 will have evolved into a useful environment to get actual work done, as opposed to watching streaming media and checking one's Facebook and Twitter feeds.

"The adoption rate for Windows 10 is FLAT ..."

ummm ...

Not saying it's a great growth rate, but in the past half-year (July '16 to Jan. '17), Win10 share of desktops is up 19.7%, per the table you provided (from 21.13% to 25.30%). If it goes at this pace for the next half-year, they'll have 30.3%.

Just sayin' ...

When 7 dies I’ll probably switch my office to Linux, and run 10 in a VM for the purpose of supporting my clients who use Win.

MS jumped on the suck-train with Win8, and they’re still full speed ahead IMNSHO. They go after the lowest common denominator, which is people who like to use one finger to navigate the web. Stack on top of that their shameless theft of demographic and usage data, and they should be fined out of business.

Thanks for all your threads, dayglored.

Preventing dust accumulation, indeed!
The update cycle will now turn into the “upgrade” cycle with little grace period for application. There will no longer be an ability to selectively apply patches - you’ve got to take the entire upgrade. According to the linked article, this will occur every 6 months.
When imaging workstations via SCCM, it might be a good time to start layering your images and update the base OS with an ISO when released to the public. Then you’ll always have the latest, “upgraded” base OS for subsequent imaging work. Job security! Thanks MS!!

I’m actually looking forward to it. The update is supposed to contain usb audio class 2.0 which means I wouldn’t have to install custom drivers for every audio device I have.

Not really any more so than in 7 or 8.1. The BSOD mention was because in the Insider preview versions, they've changed the BSOD color from blue to green.

Official releases will still use the classic blue.
