Study: Those High-Priced Antioxidants May Be Killing You
Study Finds ^ | 20 February | Stewart Lawrence

BEIJING — Fear of mortality is one reason Americans spend so much on “antioxidant” products, including Vitamin C supplements and beta-carotene, which promise a longer healthier life. According to the National Institutes of Health, more than half of adults in the U.S. consume some kind of antioxidant product, spending $37 billion each year.

But a study conducted in China – where aging is akin to a national obsession these days – claims that antioxidants don’t work as billed. The study is published in the journal Redox Biology.

A new study finds that antioxidant supplements may be more harmful to the human body than believed.

Rather than extending longevity, researchers say they trigger a stress reaction which causes the body to age more rapidly.

In other words, those expensive life-enhancers may actually be killing you.

What you say is right about most antioxidants, but it does not hold for grapeseed extract.

Grapeseed extract causes destruction of cancer cells while leaving normals cells untouched. However, you have to have enough of it for it to induce cancer destruction, otherwise it acts as a more conventional antioxidant.

It works against cancer even when the cancer has become cisplaten resistant and the p53 gene goes bad.

Anti oxidants are keeping my otherwise severe arthritis at bay. I may live longer without them but living longer in a wheelchair with limited movement is not something I cherish. I reduced my intake for a few months a couple of years ago and declined to being pretty much housebound. I started taking them again and I work 48 hours a week where any visible creakiness would get me “retired.”

In clinical studies people have eaten more vitamin C than anybody could consume who isn’t a lunatic. Those people were fine.

Beta-carotene gets converted to vitamin A in your body which ends up in weird places like joints when consumed in large quantities. Probably not good.

I have not trusted anything out of China since the Ming Dynasty.

Overdosing on anything is not good for you but C is nearly impossible to over dose on providing your kidneys are functional.

And if your kidneys are not functional then you should be following a very special diet.

the issue that might be worth reviewing is the chinese sources for the vitamins nd if they are tainted.

antioxidants are great for your body. big pharma loves to run and promote scare stories for vitamins and supplements when over 80,000 people die a year in america taking prescription drugs correctly according to doctors directions.

no one dies taking vitamins and supplements. look up causes of death each year, nobody gets listed under death by vitamins. prescription drugs, mover the counter drugs, yep. lots.

Credible.

I think it was in the 90’s someone did a trial studying whether antioxidants could extend the lives of lung cancer patients. They had to cancel the study early because the treatment group had significantly worse outcomes.

Since then there have been a lot of studies, because of statistical variation, some showed slight benefit, some showed harm and many showed no effect. Meta-studies I’ve seen showed no effect to non-statistically significant harm.

I haven’t read this study yet, it was written in Chinese and the translations I have seen are spotty and incomplete so I’m withholding my opinion other that to say it would not be inconsistent with what we know so far.

I’m a cancer survivor too, going on 5 years now. Based on current research at the time, my oncologist recommended I stop my supplements. After looking into the research, I complied.

This article is consistent with previous research.

My statement about the missing gene was made simple on purpose. It is based on truth, however, as we lost the ability because of a gene mutation. As we age vitamin c becomes even more important. The study is bunk!

Reducing food and liquid consumption to an 8-10 hour window with at least 3 hours prior bed time, appears to help our bodies fight cancer.

I suspect that good anti-oxidants disrupt the body’s natural defense mechanisms for killing cancer cells and removing waste IF they are consumed too late in the day.

Reminds me of the Chinese student who was a hot prospect for admission to a University's chemistry department.

It all fell apart when they encouraged him to participate in orientation.

He replied,"But I don't want to be Oriented. I want to be Oxidized!"

By the way free radicals are killing people by damaging tissues and cells. So using anti-oxidants to attack free radicals is worse? I find this claim highly dubious. what credible scientists peer reviewed this study?

Eliminate all Free Radicals!

Details, please?

(Reminds of of how peer-reviewed double-blind studies showed that L-carnitine fumarate could limit damage to the heart muscle even if given *after* the onset of a heart attack. Something about fatty acid transport into the mitochondria enabling the heart to do its thing with less oxygen.)
