Ornette Coleman. His refusal to let the chords of a tune interfere with his melodic concepts initially got the alto saxophonist into severe trouble with audience members and bandmates alike.

Max Roach went so far as to punch Coleman in the mouth.

“Clarence Clemons No rock saxophonist was more iconic...”

Wrong. Bobby Keyes is the greatest rock sax player ever. And where’s Junior Walker?

That guy who did the sax break in Gerry Raffertys “Baker Street” should be on the list. Also the guy who did “Year Of The Cat and Time Passages” for Al Stewart.

Yeah, well he did Song X with Ornette Coleman. What a mistake that was.

I went from electric organ at eight to clarinet at nine to alto sax at 11. Saw John Coltrane in a little bar in Paris in 1965 and went in that direction until dental problems eliminated woodwinds and I took up electric guitar. So Trane is my #1. Maybe Parker shares top spot. #3 is Wayne Shorter and #4 Joe Lovano. Many of my fav guitarists sought to emulate sax players. Oops. Forgot Stanley Turentine.

Yep, I’m a big Metheny fan, but that and Zero Tolerance for Silence were real head scratchers for me.

Now, one of the better modern sax players is Chris Potter, whom Metheny has featured in recent years.

Rudy Pompilli that played with Bill Haley and His Comets is no slouch when it comes to playing the tenor sax.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Gotta love it. I can transition in the click of a mouse or two from talking about Donald Trump laying it out for all Americans to see the perfidy of the media, and in the next few keystrokes, getting submerged immediately and completely in a discussion of the greatest of jazz saxophonists.

Vannevar Bush might have well foreseen this in "As We May Think"-July 1945

I was wondering the same thing. You would have thought this would at least get an honorable mention.

Boots Randolph - Yakety Sax

< I am just not a big Charlie Parker fan, his sound doesn’t generally grab me.>

Never grabbed me either . Much prefer Lester Young , Ben Webster , Coleman Hawkins , Jackie McLean , Coltrane , Mulligan , Richie Kamuca ( SHelly Manne’s tenor )...
