RIP Hal Moore, All-American Badass Whose Bravery On The Battlefield Inspired 'We Were Soldiers'

America has lost a hero.

Lt. Gen. Hal Moore, the legendary commander of 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam, whose bravery on the battlefield inspired the movie 'We Were Soldiers' has passed away.

“He served his country with distinction and valor for over 32 years during the wars in Korea and Vietnam where he was immortalized,” the Army said in a powerful statement.

Moore was 94.

After being accepted to West Point in 1942, Moore served in the Korean War and commanded a heavy mortar company. He became a professor at West Point after the war, educating a young Norman Schwarzkopf who commanded U.S. forces in the Gulf War. As the conflict in Vietnam escalated, Moore was put in charge of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, a regiment once commanded by George Custer.

Moore became a legend for his “first on, last off” approach to battlefield leadership. That leadership was much needed when, on their first deployment, Moore found his regiment surrounded on all sides by the enemy, outnumbered 10-1.

I remember watching "We Were Soldiers" at the theater.

No matter what some may think of Mel Gibson, he has done a superior job on a number of films. During one battle, the sounds of bullets hitting flesh and the sheer realism of the whole deal had my wife quietly sobbing as she "experienced" what it was like to actually be in a heated battle and taking massive casualties.

God keep and care for Hal Moore.

Check this video out of the Col. in Nov 1965. The video is not good, but the audio is what is important.

Col. Moore is certainly a warrior and a hero.

Check out post #6 and listen to him in Nov 1965 at LZ-X-Ray.

Captain Ed “Too Tall” Freeman and Major Bruce “Snake S**t” Crandall were helicopter pilots who received the Medal of Honor for the Il Drang battle. Who was the third recipient?

“...whose bravery on the battlefield inspired the movie ‘We Were Soldiers’... “

The movie was from the Book of the same title written BY General Moore.

No argument there - old "Yellow Hair" isn't the gold standard for warriors. Perhaps if he had become a POW ...

Custer had his day at Gettysburg where his outnumbered Michigan cavalry slammed into a Wade Hampton’s Confederate column and stopped it. Had that audacious charge not been made then the Union Infantry facing Pickett’s Charge might have been enveloped from behind.

Custer was a ‘lucky officer’. Luck is important, but it does run-out if you rely on it.

Interestingly enough, the book I'm reading at the moment shows Custer and Pickett finishing last in their classes at West Point.

Last in their Class. Robbins, James S., Encounter Books: New York, 2006, 503 pgs.

True enough. But just getting into West Point was a lot more difficult then.

I didn’t mean anything negative by that . . . as far as I’m concerned, being the “goat” is an honor.
