Officials say water has begun flowing over the emergency spillway at Lake Oroville for the first time since it opened in 1968 in Northern California's Butte County.
A spokesman for California's Department of Water Resources says water began flowing over the emergency spillway around 8 a.m. Saturday.
Officials had been hoping to avoid using the emergency spillway because it could cause trees to fall

I don’t know why the tree falling part made me laugh. I really like trees, but...

Well, it sounds like the dam is still in a precarious situation.

20 minutes of raw footage from helicopter over the emergency spillway.
IOWs, the emergency spillway is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
I’ve built scores of them, on a much much smaller scale.
The overflow is contained when the main outlet cannot handle the load.
Well, as the alarmists say, because of man-caused climate change California has moved into perpetual drought. So that’s fortunate or Lake Oroville would really be in trouble now. /sarc
Awesome video-—I’ve never seen anything like this.
.
LOL..........
Like that, good one. Take care.
A lot of people who read FR (like myself) enjoy not just the articles but the commentary of other FReepers.
If interest lies in a particular subject we welcome being directed to other commentary that may have been posted on the topic on previous threads. And that is exactly what deport is doing, noting in his post that there are already 71 comments on this subject.
Thank you, deport.
Sorry. Could not resist. FReepRegards
+1!
Uh, no. In this case the spillway has failed and had to be shut down else the dam erodes away. See Teton Dam failure.
It was in fun. Many years ago it used to be a big No No on here to post duplicate threads. I remembered that one from a long time ago and posted it.
I agree with you. deport is good people.
I better not hear anybody from California hollering about their “drought” for a while.
Aha! An admission of guilt!
The emergency spillway appears to be seriously damaged.
that is the main spillway that is damaged.
structurally the dam is in good condition. it is the spill way which is located separate from the dam that is toast.
