The sun is setting on one of the most famous warships to ever serve in the U.S. Naval Fleet.
On Feb. 3, the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) will be officially decommissioned at the Newport News Shipyard, the same place where the ship was built decades ago.
On December 1, 2012, the USS Enterprise was inactivated at Naval Station Norfolk less than a month after returning from her final deployment, marking her 25th and final homecoming after 51 years of service.
In June 2013, the USS Enterprise made her final voyage, transiting from Naval Station Norfolk to the Newport News Shipyard where the ship has spent the past several years having nuclear fuel removed from its eight nuclear reactors.

FWIW: about 27 years ago my roommate was the Nuclear Propulsion officer on the Enterprise. Every morning he would ride his bicycle 20 miles to the base for duty. Nice guy, strong like bull. Can’t remember his name now.

A friend of mine (whom I shall NOT name) has a Millenial son who actually thought that the carrier USS Enterprise was named after the TV starship, and not vice-versa.
CVN-80 will also carry the name Enterprise. Can’t have a fleet without one

Yes, it was announced recently that there will be a new USS Enterprise (CVN-80), construction to begin sometime next year, though it will be another seven or so before she is ready. Still, the USN shall not be without an ‘Enterprise’ for long.
LOL, I am having a complete and total brain cramp...I used to say it all the time, and had this vague mental image of it being said, with the tone of voice, but...I just could not bring it into focus!
I had to look online, and there is much discourse about it, but I only know it from "Something About Mary"...:)

The US Navy has named ships after people going all they way back to the Continental Navy.

USS Hancock (1775)
USS Franklin (1775)
USS Lady Washington (1776)
USS Deane (1778)
One of a very few (if any) ships from MY NAVY.
As a member of US Naval Historical Foundation, I rode the ‘Big(ger) E’ in 2000 or 2001 on a dependents day cruise as we were dedicating the ‘Enterprise Room’ aboard her.
I had a ‘Bridge Pass’ and the biggest thing I found - even though she was built in the 50s/60s - that the ladders had gotten steeper and the passageways were a lot narrower than ships I had served on.
