Cafe X's robot barista may put hipsters out of a job

Hipsters beware: the new face of coffee shops doesn’t have a face at all. “Gordon” is the first in a new line of robotic automated baristas at Cafe X in San Francisco, capable of taking and delivering two orders a minute, every minute, all day long.

The process isn’t just fast, it’s streamlined to be completely hassle-free. All you need to do is tap your desired order on your phone, or use the kiosk’s built-in screen. Within seconds, Gordon will provide you with a perfectly executed beverage of your choice, down to the artisanal beans.

Maybe it could leak hydraulic fluid in your latte if it didn’t like you.

Is Cafe X paying the robots $15/hour??? I bet the robots are smarter than an average Starbucks barista. They are more sanitary...

It's a nice looking machine. I could see putting these in airports, shopping malls, high end corporate offices, convention centers, stadiums and other relatively secure areas.

It's also a cool marketing gimmick that should bring in people simply for the novelty of it.

Nope. This one actually produces coffee.

That other thing produced dirty dishwater filtered though a sweaty sock.

I’ve been predicting this for 3 years: espresso machines are already so automated that all the barman has to do is press a couple of buttons. It was only a matter of time before they turned the machine around and added an credit card swiper to it and let the customer push the buttons. (The robot arm seems a bit much to me, but hey, what do i know about building self-serve espresso bars?)

Will it produce a drink that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea?

Share and Enjoy!

I would add a small flat screen to the robot arm with a face displayed that could change expressions, smile, etc

You must be thinking of Baxter.

Robot arm I assume is there so you can watch it being made and see the ingredients.

The old vending machines had who knows what going on inside. Doubt they cleaned the insides very often

I'm not sure robots can provide the same service as a trained (and naturally gifted) professional.

I wonder if they’ll bring back the paper poker coffee cups?

Back in the 80’s in Japan, the coffee vending machines had canned coffee, with a pop top. Hot and strong and creamy sweet. It was very warming on those chilly coastal nights whilst out late taking in the town.

This is what a $15 minimum wage gets you. Robots who work for nothing.

Robots don’t work for nothing.

You have to pay for their engineering, manufacture, maintenance and support.

But they work for less. And they come with features and upgrades.

Somehow it would get the tea wrong in my case every time.

I’d expect no less from the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation.

The jobs that come from robot support will be a better class and paying too.
