Will closing Bourbon Street doors at 3 a.m. curb crime?

For decades, bars along Bourbon Street have had an open-door policy, enticing anyone over 21 to walk in at all hours with drink specials, blaring music and neon lights. Come in, order a drink and carry it back out to the street, if you like.

City and state officials want to put an end to this easy access, and they are proposing the bars close their doors at 3 a.m. -- but remain open for business -- in an effort to curb violence that has stained the city's image.

"I don't see what the point is in it," said Earl Bernhardt, owner of Tropical Isle and other clubs on and near Bourbon. He worries the policy might affect his bottom line. "We do a lot of business after 3 o'clock."

Bourbon St. Webcam. Any Freepers awake at 3:00am central and can check it please report back as to activity on the street. It’s 11:18 central right now and it’s cranking.

At least the weather is nice. Bookmarked this site and it makes me feel like heading there now but I won’t.

On Freemont Street in Vegas there’s around 50 undercover officers on duty at any one time and you’ll lose money trying to guess who they are. They work the crowd of people walking up and down the street. When the light show starts is when they really keep an eye out for purse snatchers and pick pockets and they remove then with the efficiency of a special ops team, quick and quiet. New Orleans needs to do the same thing.

NOLA does have a lot of undercover cops that you would never guess that they are. They dress up as obviously out of town tourist or homeless folks or gangstas or whatever. The undercover cops make a lot of key arrests and petty arrests but the media does not broadcast it as the NOPD likes to keep it under the radar. Crime, in particularly petty crime, would be worse without these guys and girls. The NOPD also uses "confiscated" cars to bait criminals.

BTW, I was watching an episode of 'The First 48' and one of the detectives who showed up on the scene was unshaved and had an outfit on that made him look like a tow truck driver. He was NOPD all the way.
