A woman narrowly avoided a carjacking after stopping to help what she thought was a child in the middle of the road Sunday night. It turned out the child was actually a dummy.
The 33-year-old woman was driving home from work when she noticed what looked like a child sitting in the middle of the road at the intersection of West Southwinds Drive and Pagoda Court in the Paradise East subdivision, according to the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office.
As she stopped, two young men wearing dark hoodies pulled on the door handles of the woman’s locked vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. The woman immediately drove away, which was “absolutely the right thing to do,” said Chief Detective Maj. Jason A. Wank.
Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate any suspects. The dummy was seized. The incident still is under investigation.
“This incident should serve as a reminder that while operating your vehicle it’s a good idea to keep your doors locked and remain inside when approaching anything suspicious,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement on its website.
The dummy was constructed of a fake plastic head and children’s clothing, including a red Field & Stream T-shirt. Anyone with information about the dummy or the people responsible for making should contact the sheriff’s office, Derek Moore, at 252-728-8400 ext. 8849 or Crime Stoppers at 252-726-INFO (4636).
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of people involved.
Rural NC is getting dangerous. House across the street broken into in the middle of the day, fugitive murder suspect running through the neighborhood, murders, breakins, chaos. Oh, and drugs, lots and lots of drugs.
A trend that's been going on my entire life.
In college in the early 70's I hitch-hiked all over the country. Never had a threat.

We had a tragic prank in our town several years ago. These kids staged a “kidnapping” near a local coffee shop. A citizen “rescued” the “victim” by shooting the perps. IIRC at least one perp died. No charges against the citizen, but it didn’t make him feel any better.
The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office says that viewer information led them to the 10, 14, and 17 year olds.
Investigators say that one of the three told them that the whole ordeal was supposed to be a prank, and that they had hoped that a car would hit the dummy, thinking they had hit a real person and “freak out”.

Naw, real evil is when the Islamics do it ... they use one of their children.
Many many moons ago I worked for the Forest Service in California (during semester breaks in college). One of the guys was from Compton. He said it was common in Compton for the thugs to drag an old couch in to the middle of the road and if someone stopped to move the couch they would jump out and rob the person.
I guess they upgraded to dummy children.

Sounds more like the kind of thing Mexican gangs have been pulling for years. Kidnapping for ransom is an industry down there. Obama ... the gift that keeps on giving.

Anybody out on the road nowadays “without a cellphone” is a criminal.
When driving, a waist pack that can be quickly accessed is a good carry option.
And/or an ankle holster.
