Madrid (AFP) - Pope Francis warned against populism, saying it could lead to the election of "saviours" like Hitler.

In an hour-long interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais conducted as Donald Trump was being sworn in as US president, the pontiff also condemned the idea of using walls and barbed wire to keep out foreigners.

"Of course crises provoke fears and worries," he said but added that for him "the example of populism in the European sense of the word is Germany in 1933.

"Germany... was looking for a leader, someone who would give her back her identity and there was a little man named Adolf Hitler who said 'I can do it'."

"Hitler did not steal power," the pope said. "He was elected by his people and then he destroyed his people."

The Germans at that time also wanted to protect themselves with "walls and barbed wire so that others cannot take away their identity," he said.

"The case of Germany is classic," he said, adding that Hitler gave them a "deformed identity and we know what it produced."

Pope Francis however underscored that it was too early to pass judgement on Trump.

"Let's see. Let's see what he does and then we will evaluate," he said.

Rome need not worry TOO much; if the sentiment shown by most Catholic FReepers is any indicator.

He is not very 'popular' here...

Everyone has the right to a life free of the oppression of government. What would the Pope have us do? Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s?
The bible teaches us that Moses refused to submit to the tyranny of Pharoah. And God helped, first with the plagues and then with the Exodus.
Jesus, as a political dissenter, was executed by the State, but was raised by God to conquer the state.
This Pope could benefit by reading the bible.

"Rome is always was looking for a leader, someone who would give her back her identity and there are men labeled POPE who say 'I will do it'."

"Popes do not steal power," the current pope said. "I was elected by a bunch of my buds and then mere peons on FR bitch about it!"

Indeed. He also needs to read his Bible. Me thinks he skipped a few chapters!

Bergogliio should issue a warning to those who continue to attend ‘services’ in Rome’s world-wide network of churches that are now dedicated to teaching the new religion. The Vatican and novus ordo churches are dangerous to souls.

Ain’t my religion. Let Catholics believe whatever they want to believe. I’m cool with them, but imho Trump is no Hitler, Peron, or Castro. He’s not even comparable to Andrew Jackson, although he does have something of TR’s boundless energy.

How ironic this pope rails against populism, when that’s his primary approach.

The Pope doesn't want Trump to put 'the people' first...

OK.

Who does the Pope think should be 'first'? Maybe people living in the lap of luxury surrounds by Swiss guards, gold, and art worth more than most small towns?

That group?

People who wear the cloak of humility with great pride?

Those folks?

Popes would do better to stick to their religion - they mock those in their religion when they try to be relevant with their own political bents. We all know that our Pastor is a God fearing conservative man but he has promised that we will never have proof of his political orientations - he bases his orientations on the Bible.

"....I leave it to Catholics to sort this out."

Which they did a LONG time ago. "Infallible" applies ONLY to matters of faith (i.e. God is a Trinity rather than a Unity and similar matters of doctrine). On mundane matters like politics, economics, etc., he is no different than Joe Six-Pack. That is, he is entitled to his opinion, and no more.
