Finch Frozen to Fence Rescue

While feeding my horses on New Year's morning I noticed a solitary finch perched upon the steel fence near the water tank. The tank is heated to keep it from freezing. It is not uncommon for birds to drink from the heated tank. Apparently this unfortunate bird had gotten its feet wet and, while making its exit, had become frozen to the fence in the prevailing near zero Idaho temperatures.

Now he really is as free as a bird. So glad the bird is unstuck. I thought it was a female English Sparrow. Those are very common in Detroit, Michigan and Ontario, Canada.

Beautiful report! I kept thinking as I watched you rescue the little bird, that this is the way God’s hand is on us when we get into a fix.

Thank you. My family has birding genes inherited from my mother who could identify wild birds by one feather and a nest. No formal training, but my children identify, watch & feed the hummingbirds, finches, woodpeckers. The food is not cheap;)

I believe of all God’s creatures He especially cherishes the birds - more so than humans. Birds can fly, men cannot. Birds can sing too;). Birds build their own housing, find their food and raise their young. All species get along with one another and while they compete for space and food, they do not go to war with one another.

Humans could learn a lot from birds.

We are amateur bird lovers too and feed them year round. One spring we had four different species nesting all around the house: finches, nut hatch, titmouse, and western blue birds. (not to speak of the ones that we couldn’t see in the oaks). Thanks for singing God’s praises through His beautiful birds!

Daddy once remarked that birds hid seeds in the bark of
trees. I asked him how they could remember what they hid
where. He said they can’t; but they leave the food for
other birds to find when they are passing through and the
weather is bad or there is nothing else available. I guess
tree bark is loaded with seeds and other bird food. It is
called sharing.

We kept a bird feeder, but Brutus got to lurking under it
and catching birds that way. Brutus is a bit of a butt.

Slightly off topic, perhaps ...

I’ve noticed a lot of stories lately of animals turning to humans for help. Just in the past week I’ve seen videos about a raven seek assistance with porcupine quills, a humpback whale coming up next to a couple of guys in a fishing boat with line caught in its mouth, a Canada goose seeking help for an entangled gosling and several stories about injured elephants.

Critters used to be terrified of humans, and for good reason. Now they know we can help them. Is this part of the End of Days?

Cute video. Why is it, though, that you only post links to this particular site? For ad income?
